DELIVERY STOP: REPLACE ALL THE IGNITION COILS

This Service Information Bulletin (Revision 1) replaces SI B12 13 20 dated December 2020.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Vehicles which require this Campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR,

the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System), ISPA Next or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry.
SITUATION

BMW AG has issued a Delivery Stop (effective December 8, 2020) on a small number of Model Year 2021

BMW vehicles that were produced between September 14, 2020 and October 28, 2020.

The ignition coils may not have been produced to specifications which could lead to irregular running of the

engine.

Do not deliver to a customer, a New, Certified Pre-Owned or Used vehicle subject to a Delivery Stop,

until the vehicle is repaired. Do not use or sell replacement equipment/parts subject to a Delivery

Stop.
CAUSE

A manufacturing defect affecting the ignition coil insulation.
CORRECTION

Replace all the ignition coils.

PROCEDURE

Replace all ignition coils, proceed as described in the repair instructions REP 12 13 512 (Replacing more

than one ignition coil).

Important Information – Avoid Ignition Coil Contamination with Fuel and/or Coolant!

The silicone hose of the ignition coil must not be contaminated with fuel, as this can lead to failure of

the ignition coil

Damage and failure of injectors can occur if they have been coated with coolant for a long time

Before checking or topping up the coolant, it is essential to cover the injectors with suitable auxiliary

materials

Before working on the cooling system in the vicinity of the injectors, it is essential to cover the injectors

with suitable auxiliary materials

If necessary, completely draw off the coolant from the coolant expansion tank

Always clean injectors or injector shafts that were contaminated by coolant (e.g. using compressed

air)

Hint: If REP 12 13 512 is not available in your version of ISTA or AIR, the procedure is also described in

REP 12 13 506 (replace an ignition coil, Right) and REP 12 13 507 (replace an ignition coil, Left).

BMW Antifreeze/Coolant: Claim the corresponding sublet dollar amount for the quantity needed to replace

what was drained with a 50/50 coolant/water solution.
