This component-specific limited warranty extension applies to defects in materials or workmanship.
This coverage is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusions that apply to the
BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.
Note: This bulletin is notice of a limited warranty extension. This is NOT a notice of a Recall or Service
Action.
There is no immediate repair required unless the BMW vehicle is currently experiencing this problem.
Customer Notification Letter
Even though this is NOT a Recall, BMW NA is sending VIN-specific customer notification letters.

CAUSE
The cause could be a hardware issue with the front (upstream) oxygen sensor.
As a result, the vehicle’s engine malfunction indicator (Check Engine) warning light will illuminate and one or
both of the following fault codes are stored in DME fault memory:

CORRECTION
Follow the instructions in the PROCEDURE section.

PROCEDURE
If a vehicle listed above arrives with engine malfunction indicator (Check Engine) warning light on, performing a
Vehicle Test.
If any of the above-mentioned fault memory entries are stored, perform the corresponding test modules and
replaced the front (upstream) oxygen sensor if instructed.
In conjunction with performing above repair for the issue described, if instructed and as necessary, replace any
of the fuel injectors that are also found to be malfunctioning.

Additionally, any other repair that requires the replacement of the upstream/front oxygen sensor due to a defect
in material and workmanship is also covered under the extended time and mileage limits described in this
bulletin.
Note: Standalone replacements of the fuel injectors and/or the rear monitor oxygen sensor, if required
are not included in this extended limited warranty.

years/150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

B. For the remaining eligible BMW i3 with Range Extender (REx) with the IB1 PZEV/SULEV engine that:
Are not registered in the State of California; or a
State that has not fully adopted (DE, OR, PA and WA) the State of California PZEV/SULEV
regulation,
This component-specific limited warranty extension to 15 years/150,000 miles applies to eligible USspecification BMW vehicles that are registered, operated and have their covered repair performed by an
authorized BMW center in the United States (including Puerto Rico) for defects in materials or workmanship.
The existing limited warranty coverage for the whole vehicle and other components has not changed.
This coverage supersedes the coverage that is provided under the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program or any
BMW Group Vehicle Service Contract that applies to the vehicle.

Should the front oxygen sensor fail again, it is covered by the remaining portion of the extended limited
warranty coverage period.

2. How do I determine if my vehicle falls under the State of California PZEV/SULEV regulation?
For the eligible MY 2017 BMW vehicles listed above that are registered in CT, ME, MD, MA, NJ, NY,
RI and VT, these states have fully adopted the State of California (CA) PZEV/SULEV regulation. The Front
Oxygen Sensor on your vehicle is then covered under the terms of this emission-related regulation for 15
years/150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
For the remaining eligible BMW vehicles that are not registered in the above states (including Puerto
Rico), the Front Oxygen Sensor on your vehicle is covered under the terms of this component-specific
emission-related limited warranty extension for 15 years/150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
3. What is the purpose of the Front Oxygen Sensor?
As the vehicle is driven, the Front Oxygen Sensors read the O2 levels in your engine’s exhaust gases and
transmit this data to the Engine Control Unit (DME). The 02 sensor lets the DME know if the fuel mixture
is either burning too rich (not enough oxygen) or too lean (too much oxygen). Oxygen levels in the engine’s
exhaust are precisely measured, this helps the vehicle’s engine management system with making the
necessary changes and adjustments to ensure your engine is running optimally.
4. What is the specific issue related to the Front Oxygen Sensor?
During specific conditions, a possible hardware defect of the Front Oxygen Sensor may lead to a failure and/
or the Front Oxygen Sensor may not properly monitor the 02 levels in your engine’s exhaust gases.
5. How does this affect my vehicle?
A Front Oxygen Sensor operational issue or failure will activate the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL/Check
Engine Light).
6. What should I do if I notice this condition (MIL) in my vehicle?
If the MIL is illuminated and your vehicle is operating normally, please contact an authorized BMW center in
the United States (including Puerto Rico) to have your vehicle inspected and, if necessary, repaired.
7. How will my vehicle be repaired to address an issue with the Front Oxygen Sensor?
If it is determined that the Front Oxygen Sensor is the cause for the MIL, your vehicle’s Front Oxygen
Sensor will be replaced, free of charge, under the terms of the applicable 15 year/150,000-mile limited
coverage that applies.
In conjunction with replacing the Front Oxygen Sensor for the issue described in this letter, if any fuel
injectors are also found to be malfunctioning, they will be replaced under the terms of this coverage.
