2011MY-12MY LOOSE OR MISSING #1 CROSSMEMBER NUTS OR BOLTS
OVERVIEW
During inspection of one of the subject vehicles, the technician may notice loose or missing retainer nuts or bolts on
the No.1 cross member (directly behind the front bumper). In the event that loose nuts are found, it will be necessary
to remove and replace them using Loctite. In the event that the nut or bolt is missing, it will be necessary to replace
them and install them using Loctite to reduce the chance of the nut coming loose again in the future.
NOTE: This procedure is provided as technical information and is not an authorization for a warranty repair.
SUBJECT VEHICLES
2011MY – 2012MY Hino Conventional NE8J, NJ8J, and NV8J vehicles
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
- Read and understand all instructions and procedures before you begin the work.
- Read and follow all WARNINGS and NOTICES set forth in this publication. These alerts help to avoid damage
to components, serious personal injury, or both.
- Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface.
- Place the gear shift lever in "Neutral" or "Park".
- Apply the parking brake firmly and confirm parking brake activation.
- Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition switch.
- Always wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes.
Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving.

VEHICLE PREPARATION:
1. Park the vehicle on level ground.

2. Confirm the engine is stopped, the
ignition switch in the off (LOCK) position
and the key is removed.

3. Apply the parking brake.

4. Chock the front wheels.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. Locate the No.1 cross member and
the 4 bolt/nut combinations. This cross
member is located just behind the front
bumper.

2. Inspect for loose or missing
nuts/bolts securing the No.1 cross
member to either of the side rails.
Are any of the 4 nuts/bolts loose or
missing?
Yes - Proceed with the Repair
Procedure below
No - No action is required. Do not
perform this Technical Service
Bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. If any of the 4 crossmember nuts are
loose, remove them from the
crossmember bolts. If any nuts or bolts
are missing, they must be replaced.
Once the loose nuts have been removed,
inspect the threads on the nuts/bolts for
damage. If the nuts or bolts have thread
damage or heavy corrosion, they must be
replaced.

2. Clean the threads of the new or
existing crossmember bolt(s) and apply
Loctite 263 to the threads of the bolt and
the nut.
NOTE: The crossmember bolts are
accessible by reaching through the
opening above the front bumper.

3. After the Loctite is applied, install the
new or existing crossmember nut(s) onto
the crossmember bolt(s) and tighten the
nut(s) to the specified torque.
NOTICE: Only part number SZ178-14010
should be used as a replacement nut.
These nuts have a friction stabilizer preapplied to the threads.
Specified Torque: 95 lb-Ft (125 Nm)

FINAL INSPECTION PROCEDURE:
1. To complete this technical service bulletin, review the bulletin and confirm the following:




All four of the No.1 crossmember nuts and bolts are secure and have been tightened
to the specified torque.
Loctite 263 was used on the threads of any nut or bolt installed during this
procedure.
