Summary
In the event that a cracked or broken cab step exists on the driver?s side or passenger side of the subject vehicles, a revised cab step has been released with a reinforcement pipe that will increase the robustness of the cab step to reduce the chance of repeated cracking or breaking. Vehicles built on or before January 18, 2013 will also require a reinforcement bolt be installed in the multi-layer steel flange on both sides of the vehicle.

OVERVIEW:
In the event that a cracked or broken cab step exists on the driver’s side or passenger side of the subject
vehicles, a revised cab step has been released with a reinforcement pipe that will increase the robustness of
the cab step to reduce the chance of repeated cracking or breaking. Vehicles built on or before January 18,
2013 will also require a reinforcement bolt be installed in the multi-layer steel flange on both sides of the
vehicle.
NOTE: This procedure is provided as technical information and is not an authorization for a warranty repair.
SUBJECT VEHICLES:
2012MY – 2014 MY COE (XFC710, XFC720, XFC740, XJC700, XJC710, XJC720, XJC740) vehicles that were
assembled at the Hamura, Japan plants built on or before 7/31/2013.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
- Read and understand all instructions and procedures before you begin the work.
- Read and follow all WARNINGS and NOTICES set forth in this publication. These alerts help to avoid damage
to components, serious personal injury, or both.
- Parking the vehicle on a level and solid surface and apply the parking brake.
- Confirm the engine is stopped, the starter switch is in the off (LOCK) position, and the key is removed.
- Wear safety glasses to prevent eye injuries.
- Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all wheels.

NOTICE: This Technical Service Bulletin contains 3 different repair procedures.
Repair Procedure - A is for single cab vehicles built on or before
January 18, 2013.
Repair Procedure - B is for crew cab vehicles built on or before
January 18, 2013.
Repair Procedure - C is for both single cab and crew cab vehicles built after
January 18, 2013.
Note: Some photographs will picture a single cab rather than a crew cab, but the applicable procedures
for the crew cab will be similar.
REPAIR PROCEDURE – A:
NOTICE: This procedure only applies to single cab vehicles built on or before January 18, 2013.
1. Remove the 6 bolts from the front bumper.

3. Open the driver’s door and remove the 10
bolts from the driver’s side cab step. Remove
and discard the driver’s side cab step.
NOTICE: Do not discard the 10 bolts. They will be reused during the reassembly procedure.
4. Open the passenger door and remove the 8
bolts from the passenger side cab step.

5. On the driver’s side, locate the flange near the
front of the bottom of the cab. The spot weld
may be broken. Regardless of whether or not
the spot weld is broken, install Vice-Grips to
lock the flange together in preparation for
drilling through the multi-layer steel flange.

6. While looking under the driver’s side of the cab, mark the 9mm hole to be drilled. The hole should be
18mm (3/4 inch) above the top hole in the lower flange. It should be 2mm to the right of the center of
the 2 holes in the flange (on the edge of the ridge in the flange). See diagram below.

WARNING: To avoid personal injury, eye and ear protection must be worn when drilling under the cab of the
vehicle.
NOTICE: Use caution to avoid drilling into the door once the drill bit protrudes from the multi-layer steel
flange.
7. Using a 9mm (23/64th) drill bit, drill a hole
through the multi-layer steel flange where the
marking was made.

8. Using a rat tail file, de-burr the outside edge of
the drilled hole.
9. Mask the area around the drilled hole. Apply
an anti-rust aerosol spray paint such as
Rustoleum that matches the color of the cab.
Allow the paint to dry before installing the
retainer bolt.
10. On the passenger side, locate the flange near
the front of the bottom of the cab. The spot
weld may be broken. Regardless of whether or
not the spot weld is broken, install Vice-Grips
to lock the flange together in preparation for
drilling through the multi-layer steel flange.

11. While looking under the passenger side of the cab, mark the 9mm hole to be drilled. The center of the
hole should be 18mm (3/4 inch) above the center of the top hole in the lower flange. It should be 2mm
to the left of the center of the 2 holes in the flange (on the edge of the ridge in the flange). See
diagram below.

16. Remove the 2 bolts from the rear of the vacuum tank under the cab on the driver’s side.
NOTICE: Do not discard the bolts. They will be reused during the next step.

17. Install the driver’s side reinforcement pipe (58308-37090) for the cab step. The pipe will be mounted in
the same place from which the vacuum tank bolts were removed. Ensure the hole on the pipe is
aligned with the welded nut located where the cab step attaches to the body. Tighten the 2 bolts to
the specified torque.

18. Locate the ground wires on the driver’s side frame rail. The ground wires will need to be repositioned
to allow for 35mm of clearance between the new reinforcement pipe and the chassis grounds. Loosen
the 2 ground bolts; reposition the wires as needed, then torque the ground bolts to the specified
torque.

19. Once the paint has dried, install a bolt (90109-08295) through the flange on each side. Install a nut
(90179-08184) on the back side of the flange. Tighten the nut to the specified torque.

20. Install the new passenger side cab step
(51083-37064). Install the 8 bolts into the cab
step. Tighten them to the specified torque.

21. Install the new driver’s side cab step (5108437053). Install the 10 bolts into the cab step.
Tighten them to the specified torque.
