SITUATION
A rattle noise may develop from the head air bag (ITS) gas generator contacting adjacent component. This
noise can be heard while driving on an uneven roadway.
CAUSE
This is due to the tight installation tolerance between the gas generators of the ITS head air bags and
adjacent components.
CORRECTION
An additional retrofit bracket (1) has been created to be installed on both ITS head air bags.
A new locking nut (2) will be used to retain the retrofitted bracket.

NOTE: These ITS head air bags were superseded by HPS head air bags starting in September 1999. If the
ITS has been previously deployed it may have been replaced by an HPS gas generator and then this
bulletin would not apply.
If the gas generator in the vehicle does not match the pictures in this bulletin, please reference SI
B65 23 00 (HPS Air bag replace on E46 vehicles.)
1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Unclip left wooden decorative strip using
a plastic tool (00 9 321)

3. Remove the left glovebox.

4. Remove the light switch assembly.

5. Remove the left side fresh air grill.

6. Remove the steering column top panel.

7. Remove steering column bottom panel.

8. Unclip right wooden decorative strip

9. Remove the glovebox.
See repair instructions REP 51 16 360.
10. Remove the right side fresh air grill.
See repair instructions REP 64 22 136.
11. Retrofit the new bracket onto the
existing ITS gas generator.
Attach the bracket (1) to the bottom of the
gas generator and screw it into the
attachment of the gas generator with a new
self-locking hex (2) nut 07 14 7 153 450.
12. Repeat for the opposite side ITS.
