INACCURATE FUEL GAUGE OR DISTANCE TO EMPTY INDICATION BUILT ON OR BEFORE 1/21/2015

This article supersedes TSB 15-0034 to add a production fix date, update the vehicle model years and Parts List.
ISSUE
Some 2012-2015 Focus vehicles may exhibit inaccurate fuel gauge indication and/or inaccurate distance to empty. The
vehicle may also exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0420,
P1450, P0443, P0452, P0456, P0460 and/or P2196.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Does the customer report inaccurate fuel gauge indication and/or inaccurate distance to empty or does the vehicle
exhibit one or more of the following DTCs: P0420, P1450, P0443, P0452, P0456, P0460 and/or P2196?
a. Yes - proceed to Step 2.
b. No - this article does not apply. Refer to Powertrain Control / Emissions Diagnosis Manual or Workshop Manual
(WSM) for normal diagnosis.
2. Replace the evaporative emission canister purge valve. Refer to WSM, Section 303-13.
3. Inspect the evaporative emission canister for liquid fuel contamination.
4. Is liquid fuel present?
a. No - proceed to Step 5.
b. Yes - replace the evaporative emission canister. Use low pressure compressed air to clear fuel from vapor lines
from tank to engine. Refer to WSM, Section 303-13.
5. Is the bottom of the fuel tank deformed more than 25 mm (1 in) upward? (Figures 1 and 2)
