SERVICE ACTION: DOOR LATCH REPLACEMENT (SA229)

This bulletin provides the procedure to replace the door latches on certain Sportage (QL)
vehicles, produced from December 10, 2015 through March 11, 2016, which may exhibit an
intermittent illumination of the door ajar warning lamp. To prevent and/or correct this condition,
replace both rear door latches with the improved parts, as described in this bulletin. Kia is
requesting the completion of this Service Action on all affected vehicles, including dealer stock,
prior to delivery. Before conducting the procedure, verify the vehicle is included in the list of
affected VINs.

 NOTICE
A Service Action is a repair program without customer notification that is performed
during the warranty period. Any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the
warranty period will require DPSM approval.
Repair status for a VIN is provided on WebDCS (Service> Warranty Coverage>
Warranty Coverage Inquiry> Campaign Information). Not completed Recall / Service
Action reports are available on WebDCS (Consumer Affairs> Not Completed Recall>
Recall VIN> Select Report), which includes a list of affected vehicles.

Service Procedure: Rear Doors
1.

Starting with one of either doors (RH
Shown in this bulletin), use the power
window switch, lower the window glass
height to be 2~2 3/8in (50~60 mm.)

2.

Remove the screw (A) securing rear
door trim grip handle pocket.

Using a trim removal tool, disengage
the door trim fasteners at area (B).
Then use hands to disengage the
remaining fasteners by pulling the
panel sharply away from the door.

Remove the inside door handle latch
cable cage (C) by pressing the lock and
lifting away starting at the lock side.

Remove the glass mounting bolt (D).

6.

Manually lift up the rear door window
glass and fix the glass with tape.

CAUTION
Be careful not to damage the
window glass.

Release the locking pin and remove the
rear door main connector (E) by sliding
the lock upward and pulling the harness
away from the door jamb with equal
pressure.

Remove the plug from the service
opening at the rear door and remove
the outside handle cover (F) by
loosening the rear door outside handle
cover attachment bolt (G).

Tip: Use a magnetic pick-up tool to
keep the bolts from falling into the
door cavity.
Tightening torque :
5.1 - 8.0 lb·ft
(0.7 - 1.1 kgf·m, 6.9 - 10.8 N·m)

Remove the rear door outside handle
by pushing it in the direction of the
arrow (H).

Loosen the rear door outside handle
base securing screw (I).

Loosen the three rear door latch
attachment screws (J).
Tightening torque :
5.8 - 8.0 lb·ft
(0.8 - 1.1 kgf·m, 7.8 - 10.8 N·m)

Loosen the eleven rear door module
attaching bolts (K) and remove the rear
door module assembly.
Tightening torque :
6.5~10.1lb-ft
(0.9~1.4kgf.m, 8.8~13.7N.m)

Remove the clip (L) securing the rear
door main wiring behind the rear door
module.

Remove the rear door module
assembly (M). The module will have to
be lifted slightly then pulled away from
the door.

Using a flathead screwdriver, remove
the inside handle cage assembly from
the inside handle cables (N). The cable
ends will need to be rotated slightly to
disengage the handle cage assembly.

NOTE: Inspect the cage for damage. If
found defective discard and replace
with a new one.

Remove rear door latch (O) and
disconnect the actuator connector (P)
from the rear door module.

Using a flat head screwdriver, separate
the rear door outside handle cable (Q)
from the door latch rear side and
remove the rear door outside handle
base.

Remove the latch guide (R).

Re-install the replacement latch
assembly by reversing the removal
steps.

Perform the procedure above on the
opposite rear passenger side door.

 NOTICE
After completing the procedure and confirming proper operation of
latches and window up/down movement, use Kia Glass Cleaner (P/N
UM040 CH006) to ensure all windows are clean.
