Hope all are safe & well... VIN # LX2099 odometer 46,516 / DD15 Engine
Has a ticking, literal ticking like an old kitchen timer.
All obvious checks were completed. We are working with CSC, we found that # 3 cylinder exhaust j brake
bushing was loose & the rocker was moving. # 5 had excessive wear. Replaced the exhaust rocker shaft &
rockers.
Unfortunately even though that was A failure, it wasn't our primary failure. SAME SOUND... anyone familiar
with this?

Will it speed up with engine speed?
What does the oil look like?
Any metal in the oil filter?
When the engine warms up does it go away, or was the engine warm in the video?

The ticking does speed with engine speed.
Does not go away if warm
Oil is good, not metal in filter

Were the valve springs inspected to see if there was a broken one? Easiest way I have found broken springs is
try to rotate them by hand.

Yes, this was done during the initial inspection - prior to replacement of the rocker arm & rockers

If Jason is correct with an exhaust leak, remove the EGR actuator rod and manually move the flap closed with
the engine running to see if the noise changes.

Trying to keep things simple (and really hard to hear from the video).. have you run the truck with accessory
belts off? Since the video is up around the EGR cooler I'm assuming the noise is most noticeable on the
passenger side?
my next thought would be an exhaust leak right at the cylinder head could give you that pulsing sound?

Have you inspected ALL the adjusting screws at the ball and socket ? I have seen even new trucks have "the
tick" you can run the overhead and still have the noise , the socket/foot is coming out of the adjusting screw
and will make that same noise. even had the socket beat the bottom out and would be sitting on top of the
valve spring with the valve stem holding it from falling down in the head. at that point the adjusting screw ball is
the only thing touching the valve stem and a heavy ticking noise will be found. just something to check out.

did you used the correct lash tool for the jakes. only reason I'm saying that is cause I've ran into where a
customer did his own tune up and had the same sound in the video and upon inspection of his tune up I
had found the jakes were set to 4.0 when they should have been set to 4.6 as stamped on the rocker. just
something to think about.

I agree with The specified item was not found. this is a good step as well as verifying an exhaust leak is or is
not the cause

Listened to video several times, ticking is loudest about the center manifold , did you check the clamp at
center of turbo @ turbine housing connection, cant see behind as the shield is still on the turbo assy, DD15
had a turbo clamp leak that was common and turbo would start to rotate and bend the drain tube , but
might be just leaking at clamp at this low of km,

Does the noise change when drive truck with engine under acceleration/ load versus no load motoring
condition. Is there any previous repairs or history since problem started. when did driver notice the noise.

You stated that you replaced the exhaust rockers and shafts. Did you disassemble and check the intakes as
well?

I’d consider running a relative compression test.

Cylinder cut out would help too. See if you can isolate it to a particular cylinder.

I had a DD15 with a ticking noise that also had aftertreament codes and we ended up finding a spun cam lobe.
It was spun enough to cause the noise but not spun enough to cause a compression issue because it still had
good compression during a relative compression check. This also had no over speed occurrences.

Curious as to what you find. I have one in my shop now that came in for a ticking noise. We pulled the valve
cover and found rockers loose on the rocker shafts. And irregular wear on cams. Replaced both camshafts,
rocker shafts, and all rocker levers. Tick is still there but oddly enough will go away occasionally. We removed
the belt just to rule out a bearing and the noise is definitely internal.

Is it possible Asymmetric injection can be causing these issues. Re: DD cylinder cutout with no difference on
1,2, or 3 SS 1033122 -- Asymmetric Injection -- GHG17 FE1 DD13/DD15 Engines (2016 trucks and newer)
Maybe there is something telling in a log file.

Would be a good check Kyle. Wonder if the EVA would help narrow down the source of the ticking? Would be
interesting to see if it would pick up the ticking sound.

Hi Everyone
The primary failure was the cams had a small fracture.
It was not noticed during multiple CSC log files which created the multiple repairs.
Brand New Truck & being warranty they had us go step by step with the most basic (common failures) of
repairs 1st

Curious if you have photos of this? Which cam was fractured and where? We have a unit in our shop GHG17
DD13 with the SAME noise coming from the front of the engine. Thanks.

I wish I did but I do not. Sorry, but since I repaired the unit we had two other units coming with the same ticking
noise. On both units it was the number three exhaust rocker near the Jake brake that was missing the button.
We found the button/pieces in the oil pan.

I have a unit with the same ticking issue. I removed the rocker cover. Visual inspecting the valves and rockers.
I found that one of the buttons off the rocker lube (exhaust side) was missing and the a few others all on the
exhaust side had brown/rust color around the button. May indicate that it was not be lubricated correctly. This
was on a 2019 Cascadia P3 module DD15 engine.
