SITUATION :
McLaren Automotive Engineering have identified that there is a
range of affected right hand drive VINs that have been fitted with
electrical wiring harnesses with an incorrect configuration which
affects the operation of the seatbelt pretensioner system within the
occupant restraint controller.
PROCEDURE :
Please follow the rectification instructions outlined in this document.
Removal:
1. Please refer to AA-RM-02A02-03-004 - Remove/install luggage bin – Rear.
Care point: Step 2 must be carried out to prevent a possible airbag deployment.
2. Please refer to AA-RM-05M01-01-001 - Disconnect/connect battery ground line.
Steps 3 to 5 refer to Coupe and steps 6 to 7 refer to Spider
3. Please refer to AA-RM-06N06-01-007 - Remove/Install B-Pillar finisher.
4. Please refer to AA-RM-06N06-01-004 - Remove/install rear quarter trim.
5. Please refer to AA-RM-06N06-01-003 - Remove/install carpet - Fuel cell & bulkhead.
6. Please refer to AB-RM-06N06-01-004 - Remove/Install B-Pillar trim.
7. Please refer to AB-RM-06N06-01-003 - Remove/install carpet and false floor - electric city.

8. Remove the Intake Sound Generator resonator box (1) on a McLaren 650S Spider only, for all
other models proceed to step 9.

Care point: The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) connector can be disconnected without removal
of ORC itself.
9. Disconnect the ORC connector MB024 (2).

10. Position the connector as below (3) to allow for the repositioning of the relevant electrical pins.

11. Cut the cable tie that secures the harness to the connector housing (4).

12. Using a small electrical screwdriver lift the connector housing anti back-out and then push the top half of the
connector housing away from the body harness (5 and 6).

13. Proceed to remove the top half of the connector housing to allow access to the relevant electrical pins (7).

14. Push the electrical pins anti back-out from the connector using a small electrical screwdriver in the direction of
the arrow displayed (8 and 9).

15. Proceed to remove the connector electrical pins anti back-out completely from the connector (10 and 11).

16. Remove the harness protection tape to allow access to the relevant electrical pins (12).

17. Locate the following electrical pins in the connector (13).

18. Using the electrical pin removal tool 11-0041-98, carefully push on the electrical pin 17 R1758A wire colour
blue anti back-out and remove the electrical pin from the connector and repeat this with electrical pin 39
R1755A wire colour blue (14).

19. Insert the removed electrical pin 39 into cavity 17 and electrical pin 17 into cavity 39.

20. Using the electrical pin removal tool 11-0041-98 carefully push on the electrical pin 16 V1593A wire colour
orange anti back-out and remove the electrical pin from the connector, and repeat this with pin 40 V1577A wire
colour orange.
21. Insert the removed electrical pin 40 into cavity 16 and electrical pin 16 into cavity 40.
22. Refit the connector electrical pins anti back-out removed at step 15.
23. Apply the harness protection tape removed at step 15.
24. Refit the top half of the connector housing removed at step 13.
25. Using cable tie 00RL015, secure the harness to the connector housing that was removed at step 11.
26. Reconnect the ORC connector disconnected at step 9.
Care point: Carry out following steps to confirm the wires have been swapped correctly.
27. Disconnect the passenger seat belt pretensioner electrical connector (15).

28. Reconnect the battery ground line.
29. Switch the ignition On.
30. Connect the McLaren Diagnostic System (MDS) to the vehicle.

31. Select ORC or ORC_02 depending on the Occupant Classification System that is installed to the vehicle and
confirm the DTC B1B721B Belt Pretensioner Passenger upper threshold exceed has logged (16). Then
proceed to step 32. If a different DTC has logged submit a Technical Request with the relevant information.

Care point: Ensure the roof on the Spider is in the fully opened position with tonneau fully closed to allow the
vehicle to fully sleep.
32. End the MDS session and switch the ignition off and wait until the start/stop button and handbrake switch have
extinguished and then wait for a further thirty seconds before proceeding to step 33.
33. Disconnect battery ground line and wait two minutes before proceeding to step 34.
34. Reconnect the passenger seat belt pretensioner (15) electrical connector and disconnect the driver’s side (17).

35. Repeat steps 28 to 29 and start a new MDS session.
36. Select ORC or ORC_02 and perform a DTC clear in the ORC and confirm the DTC B1B701B Belt Pretensioner
Drivers upper threshold exceed has logged and is Active (18) then proceed to step 36. If a different DTC has
logged submit a Technical Request with the relevant information.

Care point: Ensure the roof on the Spider is in the fully opened position with tonneau fully closed to allow the
vehicle to fully sleep.
37. End the MDS session and switch the ignition off and wait until the start/stop button and handbrake switch have
extinguished and then wait for a further thirty seconds before proceeding to step 38.
38. Disconnect the battery ground line and wait two minutes before proceeding to step 39.
39. Reconnect the driver’s seat belt pretensioner electrical connector.
Installation:
1.
Install components in reverse order.
2.
Start a new MDS session and carried out a complete vehicle DTC clear and confirm no DTC’s have logged in
the ORC module.
McLaren will auto issue one electrical pin removal tool 11-0041-98 and cable ties 00RL015 to each dealer based
on your vehicle parc, further cable ties MUST be ordered by the dealer
