IRIS reception and operational stability issues

SITUATION :

Quality Engineering at McLaren Automotive have identified poor
radio reception and software stability concerns on affected
vehicles.

PROCEDURE :

Follow the procedure below in order to rectify these concerns.

REMOVAL :
1. Please refer to A-RM-02A02-03-004 - Remove/Install luggage bin - rear
2. Please refer to A-RM-05M01-01-001 - Disconnect/Connect battery ground line
3. Please refer to A-RM-05M04-01-013 - Remove/Install lower control panel
4. Please refer to A-RM-05M04-01-007 - Remove/Install Start/Dynamic control panel
5. Please refer to A-RM-06N02-01-002 - Remove/Install tunnel console - upper

Care Point: Ensure care is taken not to damage the leather on the instrument cluster cover when working in this
area.
14. Apply 120mm of felt tape to the facia assembly as shown (1).

15. Fit ferrite (11M1420) to the instrument cluster leads (2). Fit approximately 30mm back from the rear connector.

16. Attach two ferrites (11M1419CP) to central locking antenna (4). The antenna is a black cable located under the
Body Control Unit (BCU). Locate the first connector approximately 30mm away from the connection to the BCU.

17. Apply perm elastic tape to each ferrite (5).

18. Attach Ferrites to the underside of the BCU ensuring that they are sufficiently retained by the adhesive tape (6).

19. Attach Ferrite (11M1422CP) to the RJ45 cable leading to the head unit. The ferrite should be fitted approximately
45-50mm away from the connector (7). Once this has been performed apply perm elastic tape to the ferrite (8).

20. Attach the ferrite to the harness trunking; ensure that the ferrite is sufficiently retained. (9)

21. Attach ferrite (11M1422CP) to each of the IRIS branches, 1-Din blue connector branch (10) and brown connector
branch (11).

Care point: Ensure that the ferrite is applied to the area covered by the harness tape and not the wires themselves.

22. Apply felt tape to 1-Din bracket and around each ferrite (12). The ferrite should be placed at the first point where
the harnesses tape starts, leaving about 3-5mm of harness tape. (13) The ferrites and felt tape have been shown
with the head unit/HW High Line 1-Din IRIS fitted in order to highlight the correct positioning. The removed unit is
to be replaced, as outlined in the installation section of the bulletin. Ensure that the tape applied to the head unit
bracket forms the interface between the bracket and the two ferrites (14).

Care point: Be careful not to damage leather components in this area as the HVAC bracket has relatively sharp
edges.
23. The image is displayed below of the fitted ferrites and felt tape attached to the IRIS branches with the connectors
inserted into HVAC control unit (15).

Care point: Ensure that the ferrite is closed firmly.
24. Remove existing edge clip from the new IRIS display wiring harness (16). Apply 4 turns of felt tape 95mm from
the display end connector. Fit ferrite (11M0420) ensuring that the display connector is covering the felt tape (17).

25. Apply one piece of felt tape around the entire ferrite casing on the IRIS display wiring harness (18).

Care point: Apply sufficient force on the edge clip-cable tie to ensure a tight fit around the felt tape.
26. Fit edge clip-cable tie (19) around the felt tape and fit two edge clips (20) should be fitted on either one of the
longer surfaces

27. The completed section of the IRIS display wiring harness should look as per the image below.

28. Apply felt tape to either end of the ID label (E01). This is the label nearest to the ferrite. (21).

29. Apply felt tape to the 1-DIN label at the other end of the harness and to secure it into position (22).

30. The old IRIS display wiring harness can now be removed and replaced with the new unit. Apply felt tape to the
facia beam adjacent to ferrite (23). Apply felt tape on the upper tunnel assembly to form an interface between this
part and the ferrite (24).

Care point: Ensure there is a 10mm gap between the ferrite and facia beam.

31. Ferrite and cable assembly should be positioned as per the image below. (25).

32. Remove the control panel wiring harness that connects the head unit/HW High Line I-Din IRIS to the auxiliary
USB IRIS socket. (26) It is held in place by four cable ties that will have to be cut and replaced when the new
wire control panel wiring harness is installed (27).

33. Replace with new control panel wiring harness.

INSTALLATION:
Care point: Ensure that the HVAC control unit is always flashed to the vehicle.
34. Replace HVAC control unit with updated component as per instruction A-RM-05M03-01-005.
35. Replace Auxiliary USB Connector Unit with updated component as per instruction A-RM-05M04-01-011.
36. Replace head unit/HW High Line 1-Din IRIS with updated component as per instruction A-RM-05M04-01-005.
37. Fit edge clip/cable tie to the stowing display cable to prevent it rattling against the centre console trim. (28)

38. Replace Switch Control Unit Gateway (SCUG) with updated component as per instruction A-RM-05M03-01-010.
The SCUG will need to be coded via the McLaren Diagnostic System (MDS). Enter the SCUG (29) and proceed to
the coding section (30). Highlight the Write VIN section (31) and proceed to write VIN into SCUG (32). It is also
necessary to select write code string by following the same steps as the Write VIN section.

39. Install remaining components in the reverse order.
40. Once the work is complete, perform a head unit function check using the following guidelines on the table:

Execution Steps

Expected Result

Vehicle IGN state 5 (via "start" button)

McLaren image followed by standby screen (time in top
right corner) or home screen (with icons) depending on
last mode.

Press the Home button on the Head unit

Home screen (with icons) displayed

Press the Setting Button on the Home screen
Select About and then Software

- Compare all versions which are displayed with screen
image or list given.
- If not, flash firmware via production tester, application
software via given USB flash drive
- Repeat this step to verify all versions are ok
- Indexing symbol displayed in status line after inserting
the iPod / device
- Wait until device Name is displayed in Media screen
then select the device name
- If iPod was playing last time, music will continue to
play on the speakers

USB and iPod connectivity

- Press the Home button on the Head unit
- Connect iPod / device with music to USB port to
connector unit in storage compartment
- Press the Media Button on the Home screen

To verify the touch screen
response

- Select the device on the source selection screen (if
iPod was not in play mode before)
- If iPod was in play mode select Browse icon in the
now playing screen
- Select Songs Button from the list
- Flick song list up and down on the touch screen

Song list is displayed and moving with the flicking up
and down

To verify upper Hard Keys

- Press left upper Hard Key
- Press right upper Hard Key

Song list is moving up and down

To verify audio play back

Select any song from the song list

Now playing screen displayed and track time is
progressing

- Volume changes should be observed on the speakers
without any distortion.
- Music should Play on the speakers without any
distortion.

Change Volume Up and Down - Turn the ring Encoder
in both the directions and set it to 65
- Press the Lower Right Hard Key (showing Mute
Symbol )
- Press the same key to un-mute again
- Press the Lower left Hard Key (arrow symbol pointing
upwards)
- Press Radio in MCC

- Verify the Audio gets Mute
- Verify the Audio gets un-mute.
- Verify the MCC window pops up.
- Verify the source switched to Radio from Media and
Radio

Press search to go to a known station with reception

Verify audio from this station observed on the speakers

To verify the Centre Hard
key

- Press the Home button on the Head unit.
- Press the Media Button on the Home screen

- Verify the Head unit is back to Home screen.
- Verify the Now Playing screen is displayed
