It may be observed that the ABS Warning, Traction Control, and Stability
Control (ESP) lights illuminate when the key switch is pushed in to
activate the Air Intake Preheater. The lights will illuminate regardless of
whether the vehicle has Air Intake Preheater installed or not.
IMPORTANT: This condition will only occur on trucks built with ROM
3 ABS software, built after Sep 2019.
Per Volvo's speci cations, the Bendix ABS ECU performs a bulb check
every time it sees a change in the ignition state. The ABS
module monitors data link DL1 for key switch status. The lights will come
when the key is turned to the ignition position, then turned back to
ON after engine crank.
If the ignition switch is pushed in to request engine grid heat, the ABS
module interprets the switch movement as a change in the ignition state
and will turn the light on after the key has been released.
Prior to ROM 3 software, the ABS controller used the hardwired input
from the VECU ignition circuit to monitor ignition state, meaning a state
change would only be recognized at ignition ON and not every change
in key position. This resulted in the lights only illuminating once, when
the key was switched to the ON position.
The ABS warning lights are working per design so that they meet and
exceed Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 136.
