North America, Inc. would like to inform you of certain fault possibilities that could occur with the left side handlebar switch (p.n. 61711070000) that is mounted on the 2020 1290 Super Duke R. This new generation handlebar switch is similar to an ECU and should never be disassembled or opened (as noted in repair manual). This information is meant to help you diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve the three following possibilities.

HANDLEBAR SWITCH INFORMATION

INITIAL INFORMATION:

North America, Inc. would like to inform you of certain fault possibilities that could occur with the
left side handlebar switch (p.n. 61711070000) that is mounted on the 2020 1290 Super Duke R.
This new generation handlebar switch is similar to an ECU and should never be disassembled or opened
(as noted in repair manual).
This information is meant to help you diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve the three following
possibilities.
POSSIBILITES AND RESOLUTIONS:
1. Switch buttons are unresponsive and various CAN-BUS DTC errors
Problem: The handlebar switch (Fig. 1) switches itself off giving the impression that the switch is
faulty.
Cause: The error is caused when the vehicle communication interface (VCI) is connected to the
vehicle after the ignition system has already been switched on. In addition, this leads to further
communication errors with other control units, and the error message “HBS Communication” is
visible in the combination instrument.
Remedy: The error can be remedied by switching the ignition system on and off again for 30
seconds. The fault memory must subsequently be cleared of all DTC’s upon the next scanning.
In order to prevent this error, it is essential to adhere to the sequence that is described in the XC_2
manual:
1. Attach the KTM
XCharge_Pro battery charger to the vehicle.
2. Connect the VCI to the vehicle.
4. Switch on the ignition system.
Note: Replacing the combination switch is not allowable if it exhibits the problem described above.
Warranty claims submitted for this fault pattern will be rejected.

3. Connect the VCI with the XC_2 diagnostic tool.

2. Back button malfunction
Problem: Tolerance problems in the “Back” button (Fig. 2). The “Back” button is continually
actuated or pressed.
Cause: It is not possible to access the menu in the combination instrument, since it is immediately
closed again by the “Back” button signal.
Remedy: In this case, the combination switch must be replaced. Please take care when removing
the switch from the motorcycle. You will have to remove the lock on grip to be able to slide the switch
off of the handlebar. Loosen the screw (Fig. 3) to slide switch off of the handlebar.

3. Unresponsive turn signal switch
Problem: The turn signal switch is sometimes unresponsive when actuated (Fig. 4).
Cause: There are two possibilities to check.
1.
Check as to whether there is an actual malfunction (e.g. actuating the left turn signal
does not work).
2.
Or for example, the range of movement of the turn signal switch is the subject of the
complaint.
Remedy: There are two possible resolutions.
1.
If there is a functional failure and the switch does not work then it is necessary to
replace the combination switch. Please take care when removing the switch from the
motorcycle. You will have to remove the lock on grip to be able to slide the switch off
of the handlebar. Loosen the screw (Fig. 3) to slide switch off of the handlebar.
If the complaint refers to the range of movement (without functional impairment), no
replacement is necessary or permitted because replacement spare parts that are
available are built with the same specification as the originally installed switch.
