SITUATION
Cracking noises are heard from the front axle area while maneuvering at low speeds (e.g., parking lot
maneuvers) or when turning the steering wheel while stationary.
CAUSE
Movement between the contact surfaces of the wheel bearing and swivel bearing (knuckle).
PROCEDURE
Confirm the noise is coming from the front wheel bearing area and remove the front wheel bearing. Use
repair kit P/N 83 19 2 298 825 to clean up the mating surfaces of the wheel bearing and the swivel bearing
(steering knuckle).

Fault cause:
Relative movement between the swivel bearing and wheel bearing.
Note:
Use repair kit (part number 83 19 2 298 825)!
The indicated part number is not listed in the current ETK! But the part can be ordered!
Repair instructions:
1. Prepare the swivel bearing
Remove wheel bearing on the affected side, see repair instructions
Sand the contact surface on the swivel bearing with the supplied sanding pad from the repair kit, see
graphic
Note: Make sure that it is an evenly roughed and level surface!

Mix the two-component grease from the repair kit on a clean support and absorb it with a microfibre
cloth, see graphic
Note: Rub the twotwo-component grease into the microfibre cloth until it has been completely absorbed!
Fully rub the two-component grease into the created scoring on the sanded area of the swivel
bearing, see graphic
Note: The entire surface must be slightly sticky after this treatment!
Remove protruding grease
Note: There must not be any grease residue on the screws and threaded holes, otherwise a secure
connection from the wheel bearing to the swivel bearing cannot be guaranteed!
