Operating Noises of Additional Coolant Pump Audible in Passenger Compartment

Wires and holder of additional coolant pump.

Information:

Additional coolant pump audible in passenger compartment.
The operating noises of the additional coolant pump can be audibly transmitted via the holders to the
passenger compartment.
The cause of the noise transmission is insufficient acoustic isolation in the area of the holder contact
surface on the body and in the area of the wire contact surfaces on the holders.
With effect from the stated dates of introduction, the holders will be installed with foam rubber strips in
these areas for better acoustic isolation.
On vehicles produced before the stated dates of introduction, the foam rubber strips must be affixed to
the brake light switch retainer whenever there is a customer complaint.
8 foam rubber strips are required per vehicle with dimensions 20 x 25 mm/ 0.79 in x 0.98 in.
A sealing band is available from the parts department and can be used to produce foam rubber strips for
a total of 4 vehicles.

Procedure:

Applying foam rubber strips for acoustic isolation.

Raise the vehicle on a lifting platform at the take-up points provided, see  Workshop Manual '40
Lifting the vehicle'.

Remove left front wheel, see  Workshop Manual '440519 Removing and installing wheel'.

Remove front left wheel housing liner, see  Workshop Manual '505619 Removing and installing
front wheel housing liner'.

WARNING
Burns caused by touching hot coolant lines.
•

Coolant lines can be very hot.



Wear protective gear if necessary.

4.1

Unscrew the screw on the fixing clip (
Figure 2 -, Arrow A-) for securing the lines
to the holder.

4.2

Unscrew the screw on the holder ( Figure
2 -, Arrow B-) for securing the holder to the
body and remove the holder.

CAUTION
Insufficient adhesive effect of foam rubber strips on dirty bonding surfaces.


Clean the bonding surfaces on the holder with a cleaning agent and a grease and lint-free
cloth.
5.1

Cut off 2 foam rubber strips from the sealing
band, each measuring 20 mm/ 0.79 in in
length.

5.2

Pull protective film off the bonding area of
foam rubber strips.

5.3

Affix both foam rubber strips on the holder as
shown in  Figure 3 .

6.1

Unscrew the screw on the holder ( Figure 5
-, Arrow-) for securing the holder to the body.

6.2

Pull the holder and wires, together with the
additional coolant pump under the wing, until
the screw on the wire fixing clip is accessible
(see  Figure 6 ).

Information
The holder does not need to be removed
further, the foam rubber strips can be affixed
on the holder in this position.

7.1

Cut off 6 foam rubber strips from the sealing
band, each measuring 20 mm/ 0.79 in in
length.

7.2

Pull protective film off the bonding area of
foam rubber strips.

7.3

Affix the 6 foam rubber strips on the holder as
shown in  Figure 7.

Secure upper holder.

Screw in the screw on the fixing clip for
securing the wires to the holder and tighten (
Tightening torque 3.5 Nm (2.5 ftlb.) ).

8.2

Swivel the holder and wires together with the additional coolant pump upward under the wing
until the holder is located at its installation position on the body.

8.3

Screw in the screw on the holder for securing the holder to the body and tighten ( Tightening
torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.) ).

Secure lower holder.
9.1

Screw in the screw on the holder for securing the holder to the body and only make light
contact so that the position of the holder can be adjusted, if necessary, when securing the
wires.

9.2

Screw in the screw on the fixing clip for securing the wires to the holder and tighten (
Tightening torque 3.5 Nm (2.5 ftlb.) ).

9.3

Tighten the screw for securing the holder to the body ( Tightening torque 10 Nm
(7.5 ftlb.) ).

10 Check the position of the rubber ring ( Figure 8 -,
Arrow A-) in the area of the upper holder and adjust it
if necessary. The rubber ring must be located at the
height of the sheetmetal seam ( Figure 8 -, Arrow
B-) on the unpainted bodyshell.

11 Check the position of the rubber ring ( Figure 9 -,
Arrow A-) in the area of the lower holder and adjust it
if necessary. The rubber ring must be located at the
height of the sheetmetal seam ( Figure 9 -, Arrow
B-) on the unpainted bodyshell.
12 Install front left wheel housing liner.
13 Install left front wheel.
14 Remove vehicle from the lifting platform.
