General Information
New Cascadia vehicles ordered with battery box data codes (282-014-BATTERY BOX[ES] MTD IN RL BOC or
29G-001-PLASTIC AUX BATT BOX MTD BTWN RLS) mounted on in rails at the back of the cab, have battery
cables that are exposed to rubbing, which may result in excessive chaffing. Chaffing is observed more on the
ground cable exiting the box. Typically, the battery rubs are found during the routine battery inspections. The
symptoms related to excessive chafing could include low battery voltage faults, or slow or no engine crank.
There are three main areas with the cable routing that to be addressed.
NOTE: If the vehicle is equipped with only three batteries in the auxiliary battery box, that
configuration does not have the ‘cross’ on the positive and negative cables in the box. If the three
battery auxiliary battery box configuration is present, then the information provided could be applied
except for the second item mentioned below.
• The portion of the battery negative cable from the point of exit from the battery box to its attachment to
the frame—as there is no fastener to secure the ground cable in place, it contacts the lid or possibly the
crossmember located directly at the back, or at the front of the battery box depending on the ground
cable location.
• The rear most battery cables that cross in the center of the two battery hold-downs, these cables are tie
strapped together—in some cases, if the positioning moves off center, the cables can rub on the holddowns or the battery cover.
• The triple stud junction—it is part of the positive battery cables, and is located where the positive cables
exit the battery box. It attaches to the left forward battery. In some cases where vehicles run over very
rough roads, or encounter severe road condition, the heavy vibration could cause the triple stud junction
to crack.
Procedure
NOTE: To perform modifications to the battery cables within the battery box, some of the battery
cables must be removed. Refer to Section 54.07, Subject 100 of the New Cascadia Workshop
Manual for instructions on battery cable removal and installation.
1. The ground cable on In Rail battery boxes, installed on the New Cascadia vehicles exit the battery box and
attach to the frame at either left rear (LR), or right front (RF) of the battery box.
NOTE: The battery box is made of a plastic material is easy to drill into.

For ground cables leaving the battery box at LR, two additional holes are located in the rear left-side
of the battery box. Use the hole closest to the frame rail to install a fir tree tie strap (P/N 23-14137000) to fasten the ground cable to the box.
1.2
For ground cables leaving the battery box at RF, an additional 3/8-inch hole must be drilled into the
battery box at RF. The RF battery is removed from the battery box in order to provide a clearence to
drill the 3/8-inch hole. The hole must be located 2-1/4 inch down from the upper edge shown in
Fig. 1 and 2-3/4-inch from the RF outer edge of the battery box. See Fig. 2. Use the fir tree tie strap
(P/N 23-14137-000) to attach the ground cable to the box. See Fig. 3.

2. Inspect the bottom of the battery box prior to drilling, to make sure not to contact any other component,
such as the driveline. See Fig. 4.

3. Between the two rear most batteries and centered on the rib between the battery hold downs, drill an
additional 3/8-inch hole in the battery box to help position the positive and negative battery locations. See
Fig. 5.

NOTE: The addition of the 3/8-inch hole, along with the extra tie strap fasteners help to keep the
cables from rubbing on the lid and battery hold downs while holding the cables in place during the
servicing of the batteries.
4. Install a fir tree with tie strap (P/N 23-14137-000) to fasten the lower ground cable to the box. Before tightly
securing the lower ground cable with the tie strap, loop a second tie strap (P/N 23-13476-000) around the
positive cable and attach it to the lower tie strap. Tighten both of the tie straps. See Fig. 6.

NOTE: To help reduce the chances of the triple stud junction from cracking, an additional 3/8-inch
hole must be drilled in the battery box where the positive cables exit the box.
5. Remove the positive battery cables from the triple stud in order to drill the 3/8-inch hole. Mark and drill the
3/8-inch hole at 95 mm from the rear edge of battery box and 15 mm below the upper edge of battery box.
