SITUATION
A Check Control Message is displayed indicating that the tailgate is open, even though it is mechanically
closed.

CAUSE
Faulty tailgate lock or incorrect adjustment.

CORRECTION
Adjust or replace the tailgate lock depending on diagnosis results.

PROCEDURE
Follow the attached procedure to check the tailgate lock. Repair as needed.

Obtain and confirm the part numbers for your specific vehicle by entering the chassis number in either ETK
or AIR which takes into account specific equipment and/or options.

If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 51 24 605 instead.
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
Work time labor operation codes 51 99 000 and 61 00 009 are not considered main labor operations. Also,
since the “work time” FRU allowances to be claimed are specified, separate punch times are not required.

The customer states that the trunk open
warning is displayed, even though the
trunk is mechanically closed.

Check the movement of the tailgate lock in
both detent positions with a pencil or
similar object.
If the movement is not smooth and the
lock binds, replace the tailgate lock.
Compare to a known good vehicle for
reference.

The two detent positions are shown and
will be referred to in the following
measurements.
A: Detent position 1
B: Detent position 2

Remove the connector S30*1B (1) from
the tailgate lock.
The following measurements are taken on
the tailgate lock itself.

1. Measure between PIN 3 and 4 (the
resistance of the motor is measured)
1st detent position: Approx. 3-4 Ohm
2nd detent position: Approx. 3-4 Ohm
2. Measure between PIN 2 and 3 (the
switch position is checked)
Lock open: Approx. 0.8 Ohm
1st detent position: Approx. 0.8 Ohm
2nd detent position: Approx. OL or "open"
3. Measure between PIN 1 and 3 (the
switch position is checked)
Lock open: Approx. 0 Ohm
1st detent position: Approx. 0 Ohm
2nd detent position: Approx. 0.8 Ohm
If any measurements are not correct,
replace the tailgate lock.
If all measurements are correct, check the
closing comfort of the tailgate and adjust
the tailgate lock as per the Repair
Instructions “51 24 004 Adjust rear lid
lock”.
