This Service Bulletin is also being released as Rapid Response Transmittal (RRT) 20-016,
dated March 06, 2020. All applicable Un-Sold RRT VINs have been loaded. To verify this RRT
service action is applicable to the vehicle, use VIP or perform a VIN search in
DealerCONNECT/Service Library. All repairs are reimbursable within the provisions of
warranty.
SUBJECT:
Park Brake Pedal Doesn’t Fully Return
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting and if necessary, replace the parking brake tensioner and then
adjust the parking brake cable system.

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles within the following markets/countries: North
America and EMEA.
NOTE: This bulletin applies to DP vehicles and D2 vehicles built on or after July 31, 2019
(MDH 0731XX) and on or before February 01, 2020 (MDH 0201XX) and equipped with
Dual Rear Wheels (Sales Code WLA).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Customer may comment on one or more of the following:
• The parking brake foot pedal does not fully return.
• The red “brake” light is illuminated in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
DIAGNOSIS:
If a customer’s VIN is listed in VIP or your RRT VIN list, perform the diagnostic procedure. This
RRT only applies to vehicles on the RRT VIN list.
1. Cycle the parking brake foot pedal, fully engaging and disengaging it for five times.
2. Did the foot pedal fully release and the red “brake” light in the IPC turn off?
• YES>>> This bulletin has been completed, use LOP (05-10-06-90) to close the active RRT.
• NO>>> Proceed to Step 1 of the Repair Procedure.

Description
Tensioner-Parking Brake

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Place the ignition in the “on” position.
2. Engage the parking brake pedal 50-76 mm (2-3 in.) from the fully disengaged position.
3. Release the parking brake.
4. Place the ignition in the “off” position.
5. Raise and support the vehicle so the rear wheels can be rotated freely. Refer to the detailed
service procedures available in DealerCONNECT/Service Library under: Service Info>04 Vehicle Quick Reference/Hoisting/Standard Procedure.
6. Remove the support plate access hole plug from each access hole in the brake backing plates
(Fig. 1) .

7. Loosen the park brake cable adjustment nut until there is slack in the front cable (Fig. 2) .

8. Is the vehicle a DP?
• YES>>> Proceed to Step 9 of the Repair Procedure.
• NO>>> The vehicle is a D2. Proceed to Step 10 of the Repair Procedure.
9. For DP vehicles, insert the adjustment tool through the brake backing plate access hole and
engage the tool in the teeth of the adjusting screw star wheel four clicks towards the axle.
Repeat this step for the other side. Proceed to step Step 11.

10. For D2 vehicles, insert the adjustment tool through the brake backing plate access hole and
engage the tool in teeth of the adjusting screw star wheel four clicks toward the axle for the
right side and four clicks away from the axle for the left side. Proceed to the Step 11.
11. Install the support plate access hole plugs.
12. Remove the parking brake tensioner by backing off the cable tensioner adjusting nut Step 12
to create slack in the parking brake cables.
13. Disconnect the front cable from the rear cable at the connector clip (Fig. 3) .

14. Remove the right hand parking brake cable plastic end-fitting from the tensioner (Fig. 3) .
15. Remove the left hand parking brake cable button end-fitting from the tensioner (Fig. 4) .

16. Install the new tensioner by connecting the left hand parking brake cable button end-fitting on
the tensioner.
17. Connect the right hand parking brake cable plastic end-fitting on the tensioner (Fig. 3) .
18. Connect front and rear parking brake cables on the connector clip (Fig. 3) .

NOTE: Leave park brakes applied until adjustment is complete.
19. Lower the vehicle enough for access to the park brake foot pedal. Then fully apply the park
brakes.
20. Raise the vehicle again.
NOTE: Do not loosen, or tighten the tensioner adjusting nut for any reason after
completing adjustment.
21. Tighten the adjusting nut on the tensioner until the mark is no longer visible (Fig. 5) .

22. Lower the vehicle until the rear wheels are 15-20 cm (6-8 in.) off the floor.
23. Release the park brake foot pedal and verify that rear wheels rotate freely without drag. Then
fully lower the vehicle.
