SITUATION
Multiple check control messages (CCM) can display for brake, suspension and air bag system malfunction.
The customer may also complain about any of the following:

Engine can no longer be switched off
Drive position (D) cannot be engaged on the gear selector switch (GWS)
Reduction of steering assist
After an engine emergency shut-off (either a prolonged, long press; or 3 consecutive short presses of the
Start/Stop button) and the vehicle going to sleep (identifiable by the lighting of the "Start/Stop button"),
everything resumes normal functionality and the CCM messages no longer appear.
When performing a vehicle test, the following diagnostic fault codes are stored in the BDC:

CD0420 – “error of Flexray controller on Flexray bus”
D91FF9 – “Flexray message, data drivetrain 2 (DT_PT_2): Timeout”
This message may be read out in the ZGM control unit or Body Domain Controller

CAUSE
Software in the Body Domain Control unit (BDC).

PROCEDURE
1. Perform diagnosis with the latest version of ISTA.
2. Is the vehicle’s I-level older (lower) than F056-20-03-530 / I001-20-03-530 / F025-20-03-530?
Yes: Proceed to next step
No: Work through the corresponding test modules
Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.22.2x or higher (estimated release mid-March 2020, pending verification).
I-level F025-20-03-530 is expected to have a slightly later release date (See table below for release date)

Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have
the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

Documentation / Diagnostics and Programming / Programming Documentation.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
During this workshop visit, the affected vehicle may also show one or more programming and encoding
Technical Campaign repairs open, the programming and encoding procedure may only be invoiced one
time.
Update the vehicle to the required I-level or higher by performing and submitting for one of the open
Technical Campaigns instead. Please be sure to also perform any additional work (before and/or
after) the campaign repairs require and/or close the remaining open programming and encoding
Technical Campaign repairs as outlined in the corresponding Service Information Bulletin.
Only if the above situation does not apply, the BMW software solution is then:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks or
the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program as described below.

Programming and Encoding - Vehicle Control Units (RO and Claim Comments Required)
The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software I-level. If one or more control module failures occur during this programming
procedure:

Please claim this consequential control module-related repair work (including performing the IRAP
Control Unit Recovery procedure first as required, refer to the SIB in AIR) under the defect code listed in
this bulletin with the applicable AIR labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments
section
For control module failures that occurred prior to performing this programming procedure:

When covered under an applicable limited warranty, claim the applicable test plan and the corresponding
control module-related repair work using the applicable defect code and labor operations in AIR
(including diagnosis with separate punch times).
Other Repairs:
If other eligible and covered work is performed as a result of performing the ISTA diagnostics and related
test plans, claim this work with the applicable defect code and the labor operations that are listed in AIR
(including diagnosis with separate punch times).
