The CV key is different than all other International Series truck Keys in three ways.
1. The ignition key has internal cut grooves verses external cut edges. (See Figure 1)
2. The ignition key is equipped with an electronic security chip that interfaces with the ignition electrical system inside the truck.
3. The ignition key and key rings, and RKE transmitter, if equipped, are designed to work together as a system to reduce the risk of
unintentionally moving the key out of the ON position. The ignition key has a small hole to allow attachment of the provided key ring. It is
important that any replacement ignition keys have a small hole. Only use approved service part keys when a replacement key is
required. (See Figure 1) The combination and size of the two rings that come with the CV keys were specifically selected for this
vehicle. The rings are connected to the key like two links of a chain to reduce the risk of unintentionally moving the key out of the ON
position while in the truck is in operation.
Both features 1 & 2 above must be properly duplicated for a new/replacement key to start the truck. If the key grooves are cut correctly but
the key is not electronically programmed to the truck; the key will work correctly in the door locks and it can be turned in the ignition, but it will
not allow the truck to start.
Additional information about the ignition key can be found in both the CV Service Manual under section 10 – Miscellaneous and in the CV
Owner’s manual under Section 4 - Keys, Doors, and Windows. An electronic version of both Manuals is available on the Publications tab of
our Dealer Service Portal.
Figure 1 below identifies the basic elements of the CV key.

There are two steps to making a new/replacement key for the International CV Series Truck
1. Cutting the correct grooves on both sides of the key shaft
2. Programming the key to the truck so the chip embedded in the plastic key head is recognized electronically by the truck’s ignition
system.

Cutting the Internal Grooves.
The internal grooves must be cut on a compatible electronic key cutting machine that is equipped to cut internal groove keys. If your
dealership does not have a compatible electronic key cutting machine, using a local locksmith that has one is the best option. If your
dealership is interested in purchasing a key cutting machine that will cut all types of International truck keys including CV, the Navistar’s
special tools team is currently recommending the “Futura” or the “Futura Pro” manufactured by Kaba Ilco Corp.
Special Note Concerning the Key Cutting Machine
Step 1: Obtain the unique “Ignition Key Number” from the parts catalog or from the dealer portal located on the serial number tab for the
VIN you are working on. The CV trucks are also delivered with a bar-coded key tag that the customer may supply when requesting
new/replacement keys. The code you need will start with a V followed by four numbers. (i.e. V1234) each VIN will have its’ own code.
This code will be used by the electronic key cutting machine so the correct shape of the groove can be cut. The ignition code assigns a
10-digit key cut number that the machine uses to cut the correct path of each groove.

Step 2: Obtain the correct key blank from service parts (P/N: 6040873C1) to be cut for the specific VIN you are working on. This key
blank has an electronic chip embedded in the plastic head that needs to be programed to the truck after the grooves are cut. It is
recommended to only use authorized key blanks from the OEM.
Step 3: With both the key blank and the ignition code the key can now be cut with the correct grooves.

Programming a Key to the Truck’s Electronic Ignition System
NOTE: Please refer to the latest revision of the CV Service manual located on the dealer portal. All key programing procedures are located in
the service manual.
