TEMPERATURE COOLANT SYSTEM FOR CONTAMINATION

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer
delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure
the next time the vehicle is in the shop.
This Service Information Bulletin (Revision 5) replaces SI B11 19 18 dated February 2019.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as Open when checked either in AIR,
the Service Menu of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with ISPA NEXT.

SITUATION
The engine oil to coolant heat exchanger may have an internal leak resulting in engine oil contamination of the high
temperature cooling system.

CORRECTION
Inspect the high temperature engine cooling system and replace the engine oil to coolant heat exchanger.

PROCEDURE
Refer to Repair Instruction 17 00 ... “Notes for working on the cooling system.”
Risk of scalding: only carry out repairs on the cooling system after the engine has cooled down!
1. Inspect the high temperature cooling system expansion tank (1) for contamination of engine oil.
If NO contamination is found then go to step 2.
If contamination is found then go to step 3.
2. If NO engine oil contamination is found,
Replace the heat exchanger as per Repair Instruction 11 44 000 ‘Removing and installing, sealing

engine oil to coolant heat exchanger’
Refer to Repair Instruction 17 00 008 ‘Draining and topping up coolant for high-temperature
circuit.’
3. Only if engine oil contamination is found in the high temperature cooling system.

Replace the heat exchanger as per Repair Instruction 11 44 000 ‘Removing and installing, sealing
engine oil to coolant heat exchanger.’
Carry out the standard scope of service, and refer to Repair Instruction 00 00 105.
Perform an oil service as per the Repair Instruction 00 00 252 ‘BMW engine oil service without
supplementary service.’
Fill the high temperature circuit with water only and flush it.

Refer to Repair Instruction 17 00 008 ‘Draining and topping up coolant for hightemperature circuit.’
Repeat this procedure two times.

Fill the high temperature circuit with the proper mixture ratio of antifreeze and water a final time and bleed
the system as per refer to Repair Instruction 17 00 008 ‘Draining and topping up coolant for hightemperature circuit.’
