While the details within this document are specific to HGJBB, the principles apply to any LPfueled generator set. Cummins
always recommends following the engine manufacturer’s
guidelines for fuel hose maintenance.
Issue
Symptom:
Crank but no start
Hard/rough start
Root Cause:
The liquid propane (LP) hoses carrying LP to and from the regulator can crack and deteriorate
over time due to age and environmental stress. The cracked hoses pull in excess air, resulting
in a lean mixture which can cause the symptoms stated above.
Verification/Confirmation
Not all LP models of HGJBB are affected by this issue. New hoses were implemented in
production in late 2017, so generator sets built after October 2017 should not encounter this issue.
It is important to follow the troubleshooting in Service manual A031C173 when faced with a crank
but no start or hard start situation. Following the troubleshooting steps will lead to the inspection of
the fuel hoses.
Leaking LP hoses can be identified by the following procedure:

Remove the hose from the generator set
Spray soapy water over the entire hose
Plug one end, and lightly pressurize the hose
If a leak is present, the soapy water should produce bubbles
Resolution
If troubleshooting has led to the discovery of cracked or leaking hoses, order new fuel hoses (part
number A041E042 and part number A041E044) through the aftermarket channel. If one hose is
found to be cracked or leaking, then both hoses should be replaced. Refer to Figure 1 for part
identification.

The new hoses should appear visibly different than the older hoses (which were susceptible to
cracking). Refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3 for the differences in the fuel hoses appearance.

Additionally, engine service manual A043L675 lists fuel hoses as a maintenance item and
recommends they are replaced every 1,000 hours or annually. These guidelines should be
followed to ensure optimal performance of the fuel hoses.
