INTRODUCTION:
Van Hool has been reported about safety belt problems on vehicles with Van Hool 20G laterally
adjustable passenger seats. The problem has been described as “Safety belt of laterally
adjustable seat blocks when seat has been slid back in”. Investigation has shown that this is
due to the installation of ordinary hexagon screws instead of low profile screws for the fixation of
the buckle and end bracket at the seat frame center. This has as consequence that the clearance
between the in-line mounted screws is too small causing blocking of the safety belt. Using low
profile screws will increase this clearance and eliminate this problem.

Park the coach on a level-surfaced service pit.
Apply the parking brake and shut down the traction system.
Switch off all systems and turn off the battery master switch.
Put a “DO NOT OPERATE” tag on the instrument panel.
Read the entire procedure before beginning to work.

WARNING!
Observe safe shop practices at all times.

Action
Slide the passenger seat assembly out and check which screws are used for the
fixation of the safety belt buckle and end bracket in the center of the seat frame.

Replace ordinary hexagon screws by low profile screws as explained in “STEP 2
IN DETAIL”.
Repeat steps 1 up to and including 2 for every seat frame assembly
Register through the registration button located behind Work Procedure W1204 on
the Van Hool customer portal. Write the text “WP1204 completed for VIN… +
number of seat frame assemblies modified” in the field “Remark”.

STEP 2 IN DETAIL: To change fixation of buckle and end bracket

Action
Working underneath the seat assembly, remove a seat cushion by removing the
screws securing the cushion to the frame.
• For the end bracket: change the fixation of the end bracket. Make sure that
the belt is not twisted! Tighten the bolt to a torque of 30 Nm (22 ft.lbf).
• For the buckle: Note the orientation of the buckle. Change the fixation of the
buckle. Make sure that buckle release button is visible for the passenger when
he/she has fastened the belt. Orientate the buckle and tighten the bolt to a
torque of 30 Nm (22 ft.lbf).
