B57 DIESEL ENGINE - CHECK CONTROL MESSAGE OIL LEVEL TOO
HIGH

SITUATION
Check Control Message (CCM) “Engine oil level too high” is displayed.

CAUSE
Fuel dilution into the engine oil due to the diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration strategy.

CORRECTION
Drain and refill engine oil, and reprogram the DDE (program and encode the vehicle control units).

PROCEDURE
1. Bring the engine up to operating temperature.
2. Open the oil filter cap and drain the engine oil (reuse the O-ring if not damaged). Refill the engine
with 6 liters of new oil.
3. Do not replace the oil filter (unless otherwise instructed).
4. Do not reset the CBS data (unless otherwise instructed).
5. Use the engine’s mechanical dipstick to confirm that the engine oil level is correct (between the
MIN and MAX mark on the dipstick).
NOTE: Checking the oil level through the control display prematurely (less than 31 miles/50 km
after refilling) may cause the CC message Oil level too high to return.

6. Reprogram the DDE (program the vehicle using ISTA Next):
Target integration level: S15A-18-07-530 or higher.
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet / Aftersales Portal / Service /
Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

WARRANTY INFORMATION
During this workshop visit, the affected vehicle may also show one or more programming and encoding
Technical Campaign repairs open, the programming and encoding procedure may only be invoiced one
time.
If you have this situation for this repair:
A. Update the vehicle to the current available I-level and change the engine oil without the filter and
submit for these repairs as described in this Service Information Bulletin.
B. For the other open Technical Campaigns on the vehicle, please be sure to perform and submit
any additional work the campaign repairs require and/or close the remaining open programming and
encoding Campaign repairs as outlined in the corresponding Service Information Bulletin.
Item A above, the BMW software solution and engine oil change without filter is covered (one-time) under
the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Truck.
Reimbursement for this repair is via normal claim entry utilizing the following information together with the
specified part number above and the engine oil in sublet:

Programming and Encoding - Vehicle Control Units (RO and Claim Comments Required)
The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software I-level. If one or more control module failures occur during this programming
procedure:
Please claim this consequential control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable AIR labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments
section.
For control module failures that occurred prior to performing this programming procedure:
When covered under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work
using the applicable defect code and labor operations in AIR (including diagnosis with separate punch
times).
Recommended, Due or Bundling Eligible Engine Oil Service Tasks
If the Engine Oil service task shows Recommended or Due in the Service status field or Bundling eligible in
ISPA Next when this Service Information Bulletin repair is performed on an eligible vehicle, then:
Program and encode the vehicle as described above.
Change the engine oil and filter with a CBS data reset.
Create a RO line item to claim the vehicle control unit programing and encoding procedure
and the engine oil change as follows.
