limited warranty for defects in materials or workmanship has been extended to 15 year/150,000
mile as determined from the original in-service date. This coverage is subject to the same vehicle
eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusions that apply to the BMW New Vehicle Limited
Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.

Note: This bulletin is a notice of a limited warranty extension. This is NOT a notice of a Recall
or Service Action.
There is no immediate repair required unless the BMW vehicle is currently experiencing this problem.
Customer Notification Letter
Even though this is NOT a Recall, BMW NA is sending VIN-specific customer notification letters.

SITUATION
PHEV Special Requirement and Operation
The PHEV fuel tanks are designed for the special requirements that arise from the hybrid operation, for
example, operation of the vehicle alternates between the combustion engine and the electric motor. As a
result, excess pressure can build up due to the gasoline vapors, this excess tank pressure must be
dissipated before the fuel filler cap is opened.
As outlined in the Refueling Procedure attachments, the vehicle’s operator performs a pressure equalization
procedure to address the above situation. After this procedure is completed, only then can the fuel filler flap
(door) be opened to access and remove the fuel cap for refueling.
Possible Concerns
Even though the pressure equalization procedure has been performed/completed, the fuel filler flap (door)
still cannot be opened and/or related fuel tank readiness indicator (code) does not reset.

CAUSE
The fuel tank pressure sensor may have failed and this could be the cause.

CORRECTION
Diagnosis with ISTA/D and perform the following test module to completion:

ABL-DIT-AT1614_TDS_VENT (Tank pressure sensor and valves)
(Path: Drive / Fuel supply / Tank function electronics / Tank pressure sensor)
Replace the fuel tank pressure sensor as instructed.
Additionally, any other repairs which requires the replacement of failed fuel tank pressure sensor are also
covered under the terms of this components extended time and mileage coverage that is described in this
bulletin.
Note: Fuel filler flap (door) issues related to the fuel door cover pot (ejector and drive), the filler flap
(door) itself and/or the emergency release mechanism are not included under this extended
warranty coverage.

Only order these parts in the quantities needed to address customers’ vehicles that have confirmed
failures.
Additionally, other small parts such as screws, nuts and seals, which are to be replaced according to the
repair instructions/ETK, are to be taken from the Electronic Parts Catalogue for the vehicle type and
invoiced under the special defect code listed in the Warranty Information section.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
This component-specific limited warranty extension to 15 years/150,000 miles applies to eligible USspecification BMW vehicles that are registered, operated and have their covered repair performed by an
authorized BMW center in the United States (including Puerto Rico).
The existing limited warranty coverage for the whole vehicle and other components has not
changed.
This coverage supersedes the coverage that is provided under the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program or
any BMW Group Vehicle Service Contract that applies to the vehicle.
Should this component fail again, it is covered by the remaining portion of the extended limited warranty
coverage period.
Non-Qualifying Repairs
Non-US specification vehicles, ineligible vehicles, eligible vehicles operated and repaired outside the United
States and Puerto Rico and/or the diagnosis and repair of other unrelated issues are not covered under the
terms of this limited warranty extension.
