Condition
Some customers may comment that an underhood fuel odor is present and/or starting the
engine sometimes requires extended cranking time.
Cause
This may be caused by one or more of the fuel injector O-rings and/or seals being
damaged or dislodged.
Correction
To correct this condition, perform the Service Procedure.

Service Procedure
Perform the following visual/physical inspections in
order to determine the source of the fuel odor.
• Verify that the fuel tank fuel pump module seal is
not leaking.
• Inspect for leaking, damaged and deteriorated fuel
lines, connectors and components from the fuel
tank to the engine.
• Inspect the Evaporative Emission Control System
(EVAP) for any damaged, loose or disconnected
components and for a saturated EVAP canister.
• Inspect for evidence of fuel injector leakage on the
engine cylinder head and nearby components.
• Fuel injectors can leak fuel due to mis-positioned,
split or torn O-rings and/or seals. The smell of
unburned gasoline may also be very noticeable
under the hood.

Fuel Injector O-Ring Replacement
*This is a unique Labor Operation for Bulletin use only.

Notice: The fuel injectors MUST be rebuilt
whenever the injectors have been removed from
the fuel injector rail or the cylinder head. If
equipped, replace the engine insulator if it has
absorbed fuel or emits a fuel odor.
⇒ If the source of the fuel odor is determined to be
from under the hood and the visual/physical
inspection did not reveal any fuel leaks
elsewhere on the vehicle, rebuild all of the fuel
injectors. Refer to Fuel Injector Replacement
and Fuel Rail and Injectors Cleaning and
Inspection in SI.
