The special parts collection program is expanded to applicable vehicles registered &
located within the 48-contiguous United States.
U.S.A.: Certain 2009 MY Volkswagen Tiguan
Check Campaigns/Actions screen in Elsa on the day of repair to verify that a VIN qualifies for repair under this
action. Elsa is the only valid campaign inquiry & verification source.

Collection Program



Campaign status must show “open.”



If Elsa shows other open action(s), inform your customer so that the work can also be completed at
the same time the vehicle is in the workshop for this campaign.

In coordination with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),
Volkswagen is conducting a special parts collection program involving Takata driver and front
passenger seat-mounted side airbags from selected 2009 MY Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles.
Under this program:
•

2,388 owners will be invited to participate. Owner notification will take place in
October 2019 via first-class mail.

•

All eligible vehicles will show the Special Parts Collection code 69V8 in ELSA on
October 11, 2019.

•

Only vehicles registered & located within the 48-contiguous United States may
participate.

•

The driver and passenger seat-mounted side airbags will be replaced free of charge
by an authorized Volkswagen dealer.

•

Time is of the essence. Once the required number of seat-mounted side airbags are
collected, the program will end and no further replacements will be made.

•

Return of removed airbags is mandatory. Claims are subject to cancellation if
removed airbags are not returned or if they are improperly returned.

Parts Information

A supply of parts dedicated to this special program will be sent to all PDCs prior to owner
notification.

Parts Return

Removed airbags must be returned to the designated inspection facility. DO NOT detonate
removed airbags prior to return. Airbags MUST be returned in their as removed from
vehicle condition.
Requests for removed airbags will be available in the Warranty Parts Portal (WPP) once the
claim has reached approved status in SAGA. Use the Warranty Parts Portal to obtain the FedEx
shipping label and required hazardous material documentation.

and Accounting personnel. Contact Warranty if you have any questions.

Volkswagen is conducting a special airbag parts collection program. Our records show that you are the owner of a vehicle that has
been selected to participate in this program.
This is not a recall but, as explained below, we are doing this as part of a safety & quality assurance initiative.
SPECIAL PARTS COLLECTION PROGRAM

•

Volkswagen has pre-selected your vehicle to analyze driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags. Under this
program, we would like to replace these airbags in your vehicle with new parts FREE of charge.

•

The driver & front passenger seat-mounted side airbags in your vehicle are not recalled. Volkswagen will analyze these
airbags out of an abundance of caution. This important activity is being proactively undertaken by Volkswagen in
coordination with the NHTSA.

•

Only vehicles registered/located within the 48-contiguous United States are eligible for this program.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE – WHAT YOU CAN DO

•

If you would like to have the driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags in your 2009 MY Volkswagen Tiguan
replaced under this program, please contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer at your earliest convenience. To set up an
appointment online, please visit www.vw.com/find-a-dealer.

•

Airbag replacement will take about four (4) hours to complete. Please keep in mind that your dealer may need additional
time for the preparation of the replacement, as well as to accommodate their daily workshop schedule.

Section B – Repair Procedure

NOTE
•

Damages resulting from improper repair or failure to follow these work instructions are the dealer’s
responsibility and are not eligible for reimbursement under this action.

•

Diagnosis and repair of pre-existing conditions in the vehicle are not covered under this action.

•

When working during extreme temperatures, it is recommended that the vehicle be allowed to acclimate
inside the shop to avoid temperature-related component damage/breakage.

•

Replace both the driver and front passenger
seat-mounted side airbag.

The new side airbag may come with an incorrect
connector housing and with female pins instead of
male pins.
•

If necessary, install new connector housing
with new pins.

•

Butt connectors must be staggered.

•

Gold plated terminals must be replaced with
gold plated terminals.

•

Silver plated terminals must be replaced with
silver plated terminals.

•

DO NOT mix silver and gold plated terminals.

•

Original harness length must be maintained.

•

Ensure the wire orientation is maintained
from the old to the new connector housing.

Section C – MANDATORY Parts Return Information

IMPORTANT
DO NOT detonate the airbag prior to return. Airbags are to be returned in-tact and left in their as-removed state.

•

All side airbags replaced under Action 69V8 must be returned to the designated inspection
facility. Requests for all side airbags will be available in the Warranty Parts Portal (WPP) once
the claim has reached Approved status in SAGA.

•

Side airbags not returned or improperly returned are subject to claim cancellation.

•

Action – 69V8 claims will be cancelled in SAGA in the event the side airbags requested for
return through the WPP are not received or in-transit with FedEx by the request expiration date.

•

Use the Warranty Parts Portal to obtain the FedEx shipping label and required hazardous
material documentation.
