Dear Haldex Customer :
This Notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the
Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Haldex has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Life Seal Type
30/30 Long Stroke Actuators, manufactured between December 17, 2013 and February 18, 2015.
(NOTE : If a Life Seal Type 30/30 Long Stroke Actuator was inspected pursuant to the previous NHTSA
Recall 14E-075, but was not replaced, it will be required to have the actuator replaced pursuant to this
current NHTSA Recall 15E017).
Description of defect:
Incomplete attachment of the internal rubber diaphragm to the actuation mechanism in the parking
brake section of the Life Seal brake actuator.
During the initial assembly of the Life Seal brake actuator unit, the internal rubber diaphragm may not
be fully seated in the spring piston of the parking brake section, thereby causing internal leakage from
the service brake section past the diaphragm and potentially trapping air pressure in the parking brake
section. The trapped air pressure may prevent full release of the brake actuator unit, and may induce
dragging and overheated wheelend foundation service brakes. This diaphragm condition is an isolated,
intermittent event, and is not indicative of continuous service braking operation.
Risk to motor vehicle safety:
If the diaphragm is not completely attached, there may be internal leakage from the service section past
the diaphragm, potentially trapping air pressure in the parking brake section. This air pressure, in turn,
if not vented, may prevent full release of the actuator unit, causing brake drag, and possibly resulting in
overheated wheelend service brakes, increasing the risk of a fire.
Precautions you should take:
Vehicle driver(s) may note or recognize overheated wheelends during pre and post trip walk around
inspections. Mechanic(s) and technician(s) at vehicle maintenance/repair facilities may note or
recognize overheated wheelends during routine/periodic vehicle maintenance operations.
Remedial actions/measures:
The Life Seal brake actuator will be replaced at no charge to the customer through the vehicle
manufacturer dealers and/or other service facilities. Typical changeout time for replacement of a Life
Seal actuator unit is 30 minutes.
Refer to the attached Life Seal Identification and Mfg. date code information to identify Life Seal
actuator units effected by the current NHTSA Recall 15£017.
Also, refer to Haldex Life Seal and Gold Seal Spring Brake Actuator Installation Instructions, document
no. L31171, located at www.Haldex.com , for instructions for removal of the Life Seal actuators and
installation of the replacement Gold Seal actuators.
If this repair has been performed at cost to the owner prior to receipt of this Notification, the owner
may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the
problem associated with this recall. For more information, contact Haldex at the number and/or website
address noted below.
