DTC P14AB00 and various DTC’s evident within the Engine control modules 1 and/or 2 regarding exhaust control unit mechanical
malfunctions

Abnormal noises from the exhaust system

This issue is applicable to both Standard and Sports exhaust systems

Technical background
•

The warning lamp and DTC’s can be triggered by non-operation of the exhaust flap control unit/s

Refer to the onward checks within the Measure section of this TPI
Do not monitor the position of the exhaust flaps with the engine running

Production change

Measure
1) Carry out a visual inspection of the wiring harness and connector contacts of the exhaust flap control unit that the DTC is relating to (J883 or
J945).
2) Carry out a battery test - Refer to Repair.Gr. 27 - Battery - To test
3) CAUTION: Ensure the exhaust system has fully cooled down - A suitable Boroscope is required for the next part of this check as
follows:
•
•

With the ignition ON – Check the left and right hand exhaust flap positions for any abnormalities For example Does one or both sides
appear to be stuck/seized
With the ignition OFF - Check the left and right hand exhaust flap positions for any abnormalities For example Does one or both sides
appear to be stuck/seized

•

Carry out a full ignition cycle whilst monitoring the operation of the right hand side exhaust flap, check for any operating issues

•

Carry out a full ignition cycle whilst monitoring the operation of the left hand side exhaust flap, check for any operating issues

•

Should an exhaust flap be suspected as being stuck in an open, closed or partially closed position carry out the instructions from Step 4

IMPORTANT: In the event that only one exhaust flap control unit is at fault, swap the units from side to side to rule out incorrect diagnosis, the
swapping of the parts from side to side will also prove/confirm the fault moves over with the suspected faulty unit
4) Remove the suspected control unit – Refer to Rep.Gr 26
•

Check and confirm the exhaust flap can be rotated by hand (clockwise and anti-clockwise) without the control unit fitted (Figure 1)

Should no issue be evident with the exhaust flap and it can be freely rotated by hand - Replace the defective exhaust flap control unit Refer
to Rep.Gr 26
