Involved vehicles are marked “open” on the Investigate Vehicle History screen in GM Global Warranty Management
system. This site should always be checked to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections
and/or repairs.
Condition

Correction

Certain 2018-2020 model year Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 6500XD medium duty vehicles, equipped
with a 100-gallon fuel tank (RPO NNB), may have a condition in which the 100-gallon fuel tank mounting
straps may not be tight enough to hold the fuel tank firmly in place. In this condition, the fuel tank may
move relative to the mounting brackets during vehicle operation. The 100-gallon fuel tank is not at risk
of detaching from the vehicle as a result of this condition.
Dealers will re-torque the fuel tank straps to a higher specification to ensure the fuel tank does not move
during vehicle operation.

Remove the fuel line tie strap.

On the underside of the fuel tank, use a small wire brush to remove any corrosion or debris from the exposed threads
of both fuel strap fastener studs (as shown). Spray the threads with a penetrating oil or lubricant, such as WD40, as
necessary.

Remove the outer jam/lock nuts on both strap studs then use a wire brush to remove any remaining corrosion off of
the newly exposed threads.

5.

Remove the inner nuts from both strap studs and pull the strap stud out of the mounting bracket.

6.

Use a wire brush to remove any remaining corrosion from each strap stud. Thoroughly clean both strap studs and
nuts with brake cleaner and wipe dry with a clean, dry shop towel or rag.

7.

Inspect the fuel tank strap studs and the rubber side of the straps.

Visually check each strap stud “T” end where it attached to the strap. This area should be free of debris and a
painted coating should be present.
i.

If the strap stud “T” end is OK as shown (check mark), proceed to inspection step B, below.

ii.

If the strap stud “T” end is NOT OK as shown (X), the strap and the nuts that were installed on it must be
replaced. Proceed to step 8.

By hand, turn each of the nuts all the way on and off each strap stud. Do not use tools.
i.

If a nut cannot be turned all the way on and off by hand – the strap and the nuts that were installed on it
must be replaced. Proceed to step 8.

If a nut can be turned all the way on and off by hand on each strap, proceed to step 9.

8.

For replacing straps only: When replacing a fuel tank strap, remove the nut from the bolt where the upper portion
of the strap attaches to the frame. Slide the bolt out of the bracket and completely remove the strap. Put a new strap
in place and install the upper bolt and nut. Temporarily hand tighten the bolt and nut.

9.

Make sure both fuel tank strap studs are removed from their mounts. Lift the rear strap completely up and lift the front
strap up and forward (there will be slight tension on the fuel line).
CAUTION: Do not use any cleaning products or solvents to clean the fuel tank straps or the fuel tank itself.
Use only a clean, dry shop towel or rag.

10. Moisten a shop towel with water. Use the wet shop towel to wipe and debris, grease, oil, fuel, or other contaminants
from the rubber back side of the fuel tank straps. For the area of the fuel tank where the straps ride, use brake cleaner
and a dry shop towel. Ensure that all brake clean residue is wiped off.

11. Remove the cap and cut the tip of the P-80 Rubber Assembly Lubricant tube open. Lay a bead onto the fuel tank
directly under each fuel tank strap.
Caution: P-80 Rubber Assembly Lubricant dries quickly. Immediately complete the following procedure.

Caution: Do not allow the P-80 Rubber Assembly Lubricant to come into contact with the fuel tank strap
studs or nuts; immediately clean the studs and/or nuts with brake cleaner and a clean, dry shop towel or rag
if contact occurs. The fuel tank strap studs and nuts must be clean before tightening.

12. Use a clean paint type brush to coat all of the tank area where the rubber of the fuel tank straps normally contacts
the fuel tank with P-80 Rubber Assembly Lubricant.
13. Install both fuel tank strap studs back into the mounts, turning the inner nuts onto both strap studs. Ensure that the
fuel tank straps lay atop the area where the P-80 Rubber Assembly Lubricant was applied.

14. Completely turn the inner nut on each strap stud until hand tight. Beginning at the front strap, alternately tighten each
inner nut to the four (4) torque specifications below.
Step 1 – Tightening Torque: 20 N•m (15 lb ft).
Step 2 – Tightening Torque: 25 N•m (18 lb ft).
Step 3 – Tightening Torque: 30 N•m (22 lb ft).
Step 4 – Tightening Torque: 37.5 N•m (28 lb ft).

15. Completely turn the outer jam/lock nuts on the strap studs until hand tight. While holding the inner nut in position with
a wrench, be sure not to overtighten the fuel tank strap. Tighten the outer jam/lock nuts to the specified torque.
Tightening Torque: 55 N•m (41 lb ft).
•

If a fuel tank strap was replaced, torque the bolt and nut where it attaches at the frame to the specified torque.

Tightening Torque: 46 N•m (34 lb ft).
16. Install another tie strap in place of the one that was removed in step 2 to hold the fuel line in place.
Dealer Responsibility
All new, used, GM Certified Used, courtesy transportation vehicles, dealer shuttle vehicles, etc. in dealers' possession
and subject to this program must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this bulletin before
customers take possession of these vehicles. Involved vehicles must be held and not delivered to customers, dealertraded, released to auction, used for demonstration, or any other purpose.
All GM Certified Used vehicles currently in the dealers’ inventory within the Certified Pre-Owned Inventory System
(CPOIS) will be de-certified and must be held and remedied per the service procedure in this bulletin. Upon submitting
an accepted/paid warranty transaction in the Global Warranty Management (GWM) system, the vehicle can be re-certified
for sale within the CPOIS system, or once again be used in the CTP program.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this program at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle,
or ownership, through August 31, 2021. Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle
inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the involved vehicle listing, are to be contacted by
the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this
bulletin. A copy of the customer letter is provided in this bulletin for your use in contacting customers. Program followup cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.
In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this program enters your vehicle inventory or is in your facility for service
through August 31, 2021, you must take the steps necessary to be sure the program correction has been made before
selling or releasing the vehicle.
Dealer Reports
For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles has been prepared and will be provided to U.S. and
Canadian dealers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports or sent directly to export dealers. The listing may
contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor
vehicle registration data for any purpose other than follow-up necessary to complete this program is a violation of law in
several states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the follow-up necessary to
complete this program.

General Motors will notify customers of this program on their vehicle (see copy of customer letter included with this
bulletin).
Customer Reimbursement
Customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs to correct the condition described in this bulletin are to
be submitted to the dealer prior to or by August 31, 2020. See General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual,
Section 6.1.11 – Product Field Action Customer Reimbursement Procedure (USA) or local Policies and Procedures, for
details.

Dear General Motors Customer:
We have learned that your 2018-2020 model year Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 6500XD medium duty vehicle, may have
a condition in which the 100-gallon fuel tank mounting straps may not be tight enough to hold the fuel tank firmly in
place. In this condition, the fuel tank may move relative to the mounting brackets during vehicle operation. The 100gallon fuel tank is not at risk of detaching from the vehicle as a result of this condition.
Your satisfaction with your Low Cab Forward 6500XD medium duty is very important to us, so we are announcing a
program to prevent this condition or, if it has occurred, to fix it.
What We Will Do: Your GM dealer will re-torque the fuel tank straps to a higher specification to ensure the fuel tank
does not move during vehicle operation. This service will be performed for you at no charge until August 31, 2021.
After that, any applicable warranty will apply.
What You Should Do: To limit any possible inconvenience, we recommend that you contact your dealer as soon as
possible to schedule an appointment for this repair.
Reimbursement: Because you have previously had this condition repaired, you do not need to take your vehicle to
your dealer for this repair. If you have already paid for repairs for the condition described in this letter, please complete
the enclosed reimbursement form and present it to your dealer with all required documents. Working with your dealer
will expedite your request, however, if this is not convenient, you may mail the completed reimbursement form and all
required documents to Reimbursement Department, PO Box 33170, Detroit, MI 48232-5170. The completed form and
required documents must be presented to your dealer or received by the Reimbursement Department by August 31,
2020, unless state law specifies a longer reimbursement period.
