Summary
The brackets and latches on 40ft Catalyst buses holding the lid on the clamshell covering rooftop components can come loose, possibly causing the lid to open. An open lid on a moving vehicle could become damaged or in an extreme case disconnected, possibly causing a hazard on the road. Proterra issued the service bulletin to replace the clamshell brackets and latches with an improved design.

NOTICE! It is expected that this process will require 1 hour per bus. Please
schedule appropriately to minimize vehicle downtime.
Retrofit Description:
This procedure upgrades the clamshell brackets and latch to a more robust design.

Procedure
Hardware Update
1. Complete the Proterra approved Lockout/Tagout procedure to make the bus safe for work.
2. All procedures for working safely on top of the bus must be followed.
3. Access the Clamshell Latches shown circled in red in the following illustration. Open the
latches and Clamshell Doors.
4. Using a 10mm Ratchet/Socket and a 10mm Combination Wrench, remove the three existing
Catches shown in blue from the bus.
Remove Catches
5. Using a 10mm Ratchet/Socket and a 10mm Combination Wrench, install the three new
Catches (040454) using new Bolts (005442-006) and new Nuts (005448) from the kit.
6. Using a Calibrated Torque Wrench with a 10mm Socket, torque the nuts (005422-006) to 8
Foot Pounds.
7. Using a 10mm Ratchet/Socket, remove the existing latches.

8. Using a 10mm Ratchet/Socket, replace the three existing latches with the new Latches
(019480) from the kit.
9. Verify that the new brackets do not interfere with the new latches. If interference occurs, use a
grinder to remove material from the bracket.
Note: Do not remove material from the latch.
10. Verify that all Clamshell Door Latches are working correctly. Close and latch the Clamshell
doors.
11. Remove the Lockout/Tagout devices and return the bus to service.
