REAR LIGHTING/TRUNK CHECK CONTROL MESSAGES

SITUATION
Various check control messages are present, related to the rear lights and/or trunk. Multiple faults or
complaints may be associated with the operation of these systems.

CAUSE
A sharp edge of the trunk lid hinge may damage the wiring harness.

CORRECTION
Repair or replace the trunk wiring harness. Insulate the trunk hinge from causing additional damage.

Note: The trunk repair harness availability is estimated for 7/2019. Until the repair
harness becomes available, repair the original wiring harness as needed.

PROCEDURE
1. Remove the right side trunk trim panel following Repair Instructions REP 51 47 161 “Removing and
installing/replacing right luggage compartment wheel arch panel”.
2. Closely inspect the wiring harness (arrow) in
the area of the right trunk hinge for any signs
of damage or chafing against the trunk
hinge.

3. Is damage found to the wiring harness?
YES: Continue to step 4.
NO: Continue troubleshooting, this bulletin
does not apply.
4. If available, replace the damaged wiring
harness with repair harness PN 61 12 9 835
604.
If the repair harness is not yet available, the
original vehicle wiring should be repaired as
needed.
Refer to Repair Instructions 61 00 “Notes on
handling wiring harness and cables”.
5. Install foam pad PN 16 11 1 181 918 over
the sharp area of the trunk hinge (circled) to
prevent additional wiring damage.
