SERVICE ACTION: BODY DOMAIN CONTROLLER
REPLACEMENT
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer
delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure
the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

MODEL
F39 (X2 Sports Activity Coupe)

F48 (X1 Sports Activity Vehicle)

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 312 F39 X2 and 482 F48 X1 produced from June 11, 2018 to June 14, 2018.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as Open when checked either in AIR,
the Service Menu of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.

SITUATION
During vehicle production, there is the possibility that the cavity preservation wax leaked from the body and
dripped onto the Body Domain Controller (BDC) and its wiring harness connector. The BDC is located inside
the vehicle, in the front passenger footwell.

CAUSE
A new cavity preservation wax charge was used with a lower viscosity. The wax can creep downwards
especially when the vehicle is exposed to high ambient temperatures.

CORRECTION
Replace the BDC control unit and renew the contaminated connector and pins. If a connector is
contaminated, renew all pins in connector.

SPECIAL TOOLS
• Ultraviolet light
• Crimping dies 83 30 2 469 691 and 83 30 2 469 692
• Additional crimping dies per AIR/ISTA

PROCEDURE
1. Access the BDC as described in Repair Instructions REP 61
35 278 “Remove/install Body Domaine Controller (BDC)”.

2. Perform visual inspection of BDC and connectors looking for
cavity wax.

3. Check connectors A258*3B and A258*2B with an ultraviolet
lamp for contamination.

4. If the connector housing, socket housing and pins are
contaminated per the two photos at left, then they will need
to be replaced.

Caution:
Make sure that the new pins are not touched with hands
contaminated by cavity preservation wax, as otherwise contact
resistances can be expected again. Hence the hands have to be
cleaned before crimping the new pins.
5. Once all wiring repairs have been completed, replace and install the new BDC as described in repair
instructions REP 61 35 278.
6. Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.15.3x or higher.
Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not
have the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10)

Note: For crimping the 6 mm² and 4 mm² pins, both crimping die 83 30 2 469 691 and 83 30 2 469
692 must be ordered for the crimping pliers.

which takes into account specific equipment and/or options.

Note: Only one of each the following BMW crimping tool part numbers (Set) ordered and received from BMW
can charged back through a corresponding claim submission (Defect Code 0061820400). Limit is one set
per BMW center dealer number.
