SITUATION
Rattling noises coming from the oil sump and crankcase area when the engine is running, with the
transmission in neutral. The noise can be heard outside the vehicle, as seen in this video.
The noise disappears for a short time or the noise gets quieter briefly if the brake pedal is pressed
several times in succession (pumping the brake pedal).
Note: The engine temperature does not have any significant effect on the noise, and there is
no relevant fault saved in the DME fault code memory.
CAUSE
The noise is caused by the combined oil/vacuum pump unit, which transfers the noise to the oil sump
and crankcase.
PROCEDURE
If the customer complaint is the same shown in the video, proceed as follows.
Localize the noise source:

Start the engine (Air conditioning and fan must be switched off)
•
The lower the idle speed, the louder the noise will be
•
Wait until the catalytic converter warm-up phase is over
If the noise gets quieter when the brake pedal is briefly pressed several times in succession (pumping
the brake pedal), the reason for the noise is the oil vacuum pump unit.
Or:
If the noise gets quieter when the vacuum line to the brake booster is unplugged, the reason for the
noise is the oil vacuum pump unit.

Replace oil vacuum pump unit per REP – “11 41 000 - Removing and installing/replacing oil pump ", if
identified in the steps above.

Work time labor operation code 11 99 000 is not considered a Main labor operation; however, it does
require an individual punch time and an explanation on the repair order and in the claim comments
section.
