Fully charging batteries: New and showroom motorcycles
Details
It is essential to ensure that when the motorcycle is handed over to the customer, the battery is fully charged and in correct
working order.
Note: This Service Information supersedes SI 61 003 10 (039)R

Vehicles affected
All new vehicles before delivery to the customer

Production Solution
Since October 2008, all sealed batteries supplied to the BMW Motorrad production plant in Berlin are charged by the
manufacturer. Initial battery voltage (min. 12.85 v) is checked by the goods-receipt department in the Berlin plant.

Service Solution
Check which battery type is installed.

For Lead-acid battery (AGM / GEL batteries):
When receiving a new motorcycle, check the vehicle age (comparing production date with delivery date):
The production date of the motorcycle can be found in the local systems (AIR, DCS, TSARA, Warranty Vehicle Inquiry, etc.).
• The new motorcycle is less than 12 months old and has a battery voltage above 12.0 V:
− The battery has to be charged and the charging date on the battery has to be noted down.
• The battery voltage is below 12.0 V on the new motorcycle (regardless of the motorcycle age):
− Install a new fully charged battery no more than 3 days before delivery of the new vehicle to the customer.

With Li-Ion battery (HP / M – Batteries):
When receiving a new motorcycle, check the vehicle age (comparing production date with delivery date):
The production date of the motorcycle can be found in the local systems (AIR, DCS, TSARA, Warranty Vehicle Inquiry, etc.).
• The battery has to be charged within one week after acquiring the motorcycle and the charging date on the battery has
to be noted down (with its own sticker/label).
• If the recharging date of the battery is over 8 months or the battery voltage is under 11.0 V: Install a new fully charged
battery no more than 3 days before delivery of the new vehicle to the customer.
Note: As of 08/2018 AIR reference to SI 10/2017 is SI 61 004 17 Battery: Determining the recharge date.

Important notes for battery maintenance
BMW Motorrad recommends charging a battery for at least 24 hours using one of the BMW Motorrad chargers
71 60 7 688 864 / 71 60 7 688 865 or 77 02 8 551 896, (77 02 8 551 897 Li-Ion battery charger).

Warranty Processing
This defect is valid only for new motorcycles before delivery of the vehicle to the customer. This defect may not be used for
motorcycles that have already been delivered to the customer. For this purpose use the "normal 61 21 00 XX YY" defects
according to the currently valid defect codes in AIR.
