Transmission Fluid and Filter Change Procedure

MODELS AFFECTED:

All 3000/4000 Series Product Families

WARNING: To help avoid injury and property damage caused by sudden and unexpected vehicle
movement, the following MUST be performed prior to performing maintenance or service procedures:
• Shift the transmission into N (Neutral).
• Set the parking brake and service brakes, and ensure that they are properly engaged.
• Chock the wheels and perform any other steps necessary to prevent the vehicle from moving.

WARNING: Avoid contact with the hot fluid or the sump when draining transmission fluid. Direct contact
with the hot fluid or the hot sump may result in bodily injury.

NOTE: DO NOT drain the transmission fluid if ONLY filters are being replaced.

NOTE: Drain the fluid when the transmission is at operating temperature: 71°C­93°C (160°F­200°F). Hot
fluid flows more quickly and drains more completely.
Transmission Fluid and Filter Change Procedure (3000 Series Product Family prior to S/N 6510069120
and 4000 Product Family prior to S/N 6610009730)
1. Remove the drain plug from the control module and allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
NOTE: For MD 3070 PT and 3700 series, also remove the drain plug from the transfer case and allow the
fluid to drain into a suitable container.
2. Examine the fluid.

NOTE: Square cut filter cover sealrings P/N 29501469 are NOT included in this kit to service former
filter covers P/N 29507434 and must be ordered separately in addition to this kit. Square cut sealrings
P/N 29501469 were originally used in transmissions manufactured prior to January 22, 1996, prior to 3000
Series Product Family S/N 6510069120 or 4000 Series Product Family S/N 6610009730. Identify former
filter covers P/N 29507434, requiring the square cut sealrings P/N 29501469, by its part number cast on
the exterior side of the filter cover. Any 3000/4000 Series Product Family transmission with former filter
cover P/N 29507434 requires one (1) square cut filter cover sealring P/N 29501469 (Item 4) and one (1)
o­ring (Item 5) per filter cover. Item 5 is included in this kit. Some remanufactured transmissions may
require P/N 29501469 square cut sealrings if equipped with prior filter covers P/N 29507434.
3. Remove twelve (12) bolts (Item 1), two (2) filter covers (Item 2), two (2) square cut sealrings (Item 4), two (2)
o­rings (Item 5), and two (2) filters (Item 6) from the bottom of the control module. Refer to Figure 1.
4. Lubricate and install new o­rings (Item 5). Install square cut sealrings (Item 4) onto each filter cover (Item 2).
Lubricate o­ring inside the main filter (Item 6) and install onto the main filter cover (Item 2). Align the holes in
the filter cover with the holes in the control module.
5. Install the filter and cover assemblies into the filter compartment. Align each filter/cover assembly with the
holes in the channel plate/sump. Push the cover assemblies in by hand to seat the seals.
CAUTION: Do not use the bolts to draw the filter covers to the sump. This can damage the covers, seals,
or sump. Do NOT use an impact wrench to tighten these bolts or stripped threads and expensive parts
replacement may result. Use a torque wrench to tighten these bolts.
6. Install six (6) bolts into each cover and tighten to 51­61 N∙m (38­45 lb ft).
7. Replace the control module drain plug o­ring. Install the drain plug and tighten to 25­32 N∙m (18­24 lb ft).
NOTE: For MD 3070 PT and 3700 series replace the transfer case drain plug o­ring. Install the drain plug
and tighten to 25­32 N∙m (18­24 lb ft).
8. Refill the transmission. Refer to Table 1. After refill, check fluid level.
Transmission Fluid and Filter Change Procedure (3000 Series Product Family beginning with
S/N 6510069120 and 4000 Product Family beginning with S/N 6610009730)
1. Remove the drain plug from the control module and allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
NOTE: For MD 3070 PT and 3700 series, also remove the drain plug from the transfer case and allow the
fluid to drain into a suitable container.
2. Examine the fluid.
3. Remove twelve (12) bolts (Item 1), two (2) filter covers (Item 2), two (2) gaskets (Item 3), two (2) o­rings (Item
5), two (2) o­rings (Item 4), and two (2) filters (Item 6) from the bottom of the control module. Refer to Figure 1.
4. Lubricate and install new o­rings (Items 4 and 5) on each filter cover (Item 2). Lubricate o­ring inside filter
(Item 6) and push the filter onto each cover (Item 2). Install new gasket (Item 3) on each filter cover (Item 2)
and align the holes in the gasket with the holes in the cover.
5. Install the filter and cover assemblies into the filter compartment. Align each filter/cover assembly with the
holes in the channel plate/sump. Push the cover assemblies in by hand to seat the seals.
