H 40/50 EPTM Suction Filter Update For Nova Buses Field Action

MODELS AFFECTED:

H 40/50 EPTM Drive Units installed in Nova buses

SERIAL NUMBERS AFFECTED: Prior to S/N 7110006189 (See APPENDIX)
Fleets Affected: See Table 1

Introduction:
Allison Transmission, Inc. has identified a potential concern with Nova buses where the H 40 EP Drive UnitTM or
H 50 EP Drive UnitTM is installed at a front to back slope of 8.0 degrees or more downward toward the output
end of the Drive Unit. The suction filter has been redesigned with the opening rotated 90 degrees and moved
toward the output end of the Drive Unit. Refer to Figure 1. Previous instructions to add fluid until the OLS reading
was “oL, HI, 02” (2 quarts/liters high) to prevent the suction filter opening from being uncovered resulting in air
being drawn into the system are eliminated upon completion of this repair.
As a Global Customer Satisfaction initiative, Allison Transmission, Inc. will replace, without charge, the suction
filter installed in H 40 EPTM and H 50 EPTM Drive Units installed in Nova buses built before S/N 7110006189. In
addition to the replacement of the suction filter, all Nova buses included in this Field Action will be reprogrammed
with a new System Identification Number (SID) to adjust the “oL, oK” band. The new SID will increase the “oL,
oK” band by approximately 0.5 quarts/liters. Nova buses built with Drive Unit serial numbers after the S/N break
are already equipped with the new suction filter and programmed with the new SID and are not eligible for this
Field Action. Drive Units installed in vehicles other than Nova buses previously described are not eligible for this
Field Action. In order to participate in this Global Customer Satisfaction Field Action (FA) program, all repair
orders must be opened prior to December 31, 2012.

Allison Service Outlets Field Action Responsibility:
Allison Transmission H 40/50 EPTM authorized overhaul service facilities will replace the suction filter and install a
new SID in all Nova Buses equipped with H 40 EPTM and H 50 EPTM Drive Units built before S/N 7110006189.
Repairs are to be performed at Allison Transmission authorized overhaul service facilities only. Allison
Transmission, Inc. will not reimburse for towing, travel time, or travel mileage.
Use the Drive Unit serial number to obtain Field Action Authorization from the Allison Extranet before working
on the Drive Unit.

Customer Notification:
Fleet customers listed in Table 1 are being notified by Allison Transmission, Inc. of this Field Action. The Fleet
customers in Table 1 received Drive Unit serial numbers listed in the APPENDIX. Eligible serial numbers are all
built before S/N 7110006189.

Field Action Drive Unit Identification:
Before the repair of a suspect Drive Unit is made, verify that the Field Action repair has not already been
performed. Login to https://sap.allisontransmission.com/extranet/fieldactions, enter the Drive Unit serial number
and request an authorization number. Receipt of an authorization number is confirmation that the Field Action
has not been performed.
If the Field Action has not been performed on the vehicle Drive Unit, proceed with the repair. The Authorization
Number must be included in the warranty claim narrative prior to submittal of the claim. In the event that you are
unable to obtain an authorization number and you believe the Drive Unit qualifies for the Field Action, contact the
Allison Transmission Technical Assistance Center (TAC) at 1­800­252­5283 or 317­242­0700.

Service Procedures:
1. Clean the exterior of the oil pan to avoid contamination during disassembly.
2. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid.
3. Remove the four (4) M8 x 1.25 x 70mm bolts that retain the filter cover.
4. Remove the filter cover and discard the o­ring.
5. Remove the filter.
6. Remove the thirty­two (32) M8 x 1.25 x 30mm bolts and the four (4) M8 x 1.25 x 75mm bolts that retain
the oil pan.
7. Remove the oil pan and discard the gasket.
8. Remove the two (2) M6 x 1 x 60mm bolts from the two (2) retaining clips that retain the suction filter.
9. Remove the two (2) clips that retain the suction filter (P/N 29538846) and remove the suction filter and seal.
NOTE: If the suction filter seal remains in the housing, carefully remove it, making sure not to score
the housing.
10. Install the new suction filter and seal, P/N 29552740.
11. Install the two (2) clips that retain the suction filter.
12. Install the two (2) M6 x 1 x 60mm bolts into the two (2) retaining clips.
13. Torque the bolts to 10­13 N∙m (7­10 lb ft).
14. Install oil pan with new gasket and finger tighten the thirty­two (32) M8 x 1.25 x 30mm bolts and the four
(4) M8 x 1.25 x 75mm bolts.
15. Install the new lube filter with a new o­ring.
16. Install the filter cover and finger tighten the four (4) M8 x 1.25 x 70mm filter cover retaining bolts.
17. Torque the oil pan and filter cover retaining bolts to 24­29 N∙m (18­21 lb ft).
18. Install a new o­ring on the drain plug and install the drain plug and seal assembly in the oil pan.
19. Torque the drain plug to 24­32 N∙m (18­24 lb ft).

Drive Unit Fluid:
After the repair is completed, fill the Drive Unit with new fluid. Fluid must meet Allison Transmission specification
TES­468.

Reprogram with new System Identification Number (SID):
It is necessary to reprogram the system with a SID that has updated OLS calibration values.
Refer to Table 3 for SIDs that have been created for Nova buses.
NOTE: Table 3 may contain SIDs that have not been loaded into production vehicles. SIDs that could not
be identified as being installed in Nova buses are not included in Table 3 but may exist.
How to Determine the Proper Replacement SID
1. Upon installation of the updated suction filter, locate the current SID in the "Current SID" column of Table 3.
NOTE: The latest download of each current SID is shown in Table 3. Earlier versions have different tracking
information (last four characters), however, the first seven (7) characters of the SID remain unchanged.
2. After identifying the current SID, locate the replacement SID in the column immediately to the right identified
as “Replacement SID”.
3. Enter the replacement SID in the SID field of the TCM Reflash window. Refer to Figure 2.
NOTE: The SID replacement can also be accomplished by entering "HEV" followed by the 3rd through
the 7th characters of the full "Replacement SID” in the TCM Assembly Number field of the TCM reflash
window.

Claim Information:
Allison Service Outlets shall submit an AWAARE claim on each vehicle completed under the Field Action.
Approved Authorized Allison Electric Drive (H 40/50 EPTM) Hybrid System Overhaul facilities must submit claims
for work performed per this Field Action as follows. This Global Customer Satisfaction Field Action initiative will
remain active until December 31, 2012. All repair orders must be opened by December 31, 2012. Claims must
be submitted against the Drive Unit serial number.
Allison Service Outlets must use the published Allison Transmission Labor Time Guide for work performed. The
following labor operations will be required to complete the Field Action. Any parts, labor, or net items requested that
are not specifically identified in this Field Action Letter must be explained in detail for consideration.
