CHATTERING NOISE FROM WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADES

MODEL

G05 (X5 Sports Activity Vehicle)

Produced from August 1, 2018 thru July 26, 2019
SITUATION

Wiper blades exhibit a chattering noise against the windshield. This can be observed and heard when the

windshield is wet from rain, or after passing through a car wash.
CAUSE

1. The windshield wiper motor speed is too low.

2. The friction-reducing graphite coating in the wiper blades’ rubber insert has diminished.
CORRECTION

1. Check for normal wiper speed per ISTA test plan.

2. Replace both wiper blades with ones having a double-graphite coating inserts.

Note: Replacing additional components will not provide a solution to this situation.
PROCEDURE

1. Perform and follow the ISTA test plan for windshield wiper operation.

2. Refer to Repair Instructions 61 61 041 “Replacing both wiper blades”.

3. Clean the windshield surface thoroughly with a BMW approved glass cleaner such as P/N 83 19 2 446 567.

4. Apply a clear water mist onto the entire windshield surface.

5. Activate the wipers, and confirm the absence of the chatter sound.

When used to repair a verified defect in materials or workmanship, the repair procedure information provided in

this bulletin is covered under the “applicable” terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger

Cars and Light Trucks.

Wiper Blade Inserts

Under the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty, wiper blade inserts are covered up to the first 2,000 miles on

the vehicle.

Additional wiper blade (insert) coverage may be available for those vehicles that have an active Maintenance

Program Upgrade. For more information, please refer to SI B01 19 16.
