CHECK CONTROL MESSAGE CALL BREAKDOWN ASSIST.
DRIVE IS DEFECTIVE.

SITUATION
A red-colored Check Control indicator (ID 170) can appear, along with any of the following messages:


Call breakdown assist. Drive is defective.



Call breakdown assist. Driving is not possible.

Additional symptom:


The LED within the gear selector switch flashes in drive position D

The fault can occur sporadically when driving over a pavement bump in the coasting overrun mode, at speeds
above approx. 35 mph.
Note: The fault occurs only in "Comfort" driving mode.

After a key cycle (ignition off - ignition on), the fault is no longer present. The vehicle is operational again.
The following faults are stored in the EGS fault memory:
420598 - output speed sensor: implausible gradient; and/or
420893 - second microcontroller: Excessive output gradient detected

CAUSE
An EGS software error.

PROCEDURE
Read out the Integration level (I-level) of the vehicle:
If S15A-18-07-547 or older (lower):


Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.14.1x to the appropriate level shown below:

If S15A-18-11-523 or more recent (higher): Perform diagnosis with ISTA.
Note that ISTA Next will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do

not have the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10 ).

During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also
includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced one
time.

Programming and Encoding - Vehicle Control Units
A. The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do not
have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur “during” this programming
procedure:
• Please claim this “consequential” control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable AIR/KSD2 labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments section.
B. For control module failures that occurred “prior” to performing this programming procedure:
• When “covered” under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work using the
applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in AIR/KSD2.
