GROANING NOISE FROM DRIVER’S BACKREST
MODEL
I12 (i8 Coupe)

SITUATION
When the vehicle interior heats up beyond approx. 90º F, a groaning noise can occur if the driver exerts
significant, concentrated pressure against the outer shoulder region of the seat’s backrest.
This can occur when pressing against the backrest for support while entering or leaving the vehicle. It can also
occur when pushing against the backrest to relieve fatigue while driving.

Friction between the contact points of the safety belt guide cover
and the safety belt guide carrier plate which is attached to the
backrest (general location is circled).

CORRECTION
Install friction tape between the contact points of the safety belt guide cover and the safety belt guide carrier
plate.

PROCEDURE
Refer to repair instructions 52 13 ... Removing and installing belt guide on left seat. Refer to the attachment for
the procedure on how to eliminate the noise.

Eliminating the groaning noise from the driver’s backrest safety belt guide
General area to be repaired.
The passenger backrest is not affected.

1. Remove the safety belt guide trim by carefully
prying upward and outwards from the outer edge
with a suitable trim removal tool.
The contact and corresponding abrasion points
are circled, and shown in detail in Step 2.

2. Look closely for material abrasion (circled) on
the belt guide trim and on the carrier plate.

3. Apply film tape 83 19 9 407 798 to the carrier
plate at the contact points (arrows/circled).
General location shown at left; close-up below.

4. Reinstall the belt guide and confirm that there
is no more groaning noise when applying
pressure to the backrest near the belt guide.
