POWER WINDOWS WILL NOT INITIALIZE AFTER WINDOW LIFT
MOTOR REPLACEMENT

This Service Information bulletin replaces SI B51 17 18 dated November 2018.
What’s New:
• Initialization requirements added

MODEL
G32 (6 series Gran Turismo)
Produced up to 4/2018

SITUATION
The windows are unable to be initialized after replacement of a window lift motor. This only affects vehicles with
I-level S15A-18-03-511 or lower.

CAUSE
For vehicles with I-level S15A-18-03-511 or lower, there is a software error in the BDC (Body Domain
Controller) that affects initialization of replacement window lift motor electronics.

CORRECTION
For vehicles produced up to 4/2018 with I-level S15A-18-03-511 or lower, only after replacing a window lift
motor, the vehicle will need to be programmed to the most recent I-level using ISTA 4.14.2x (I-Level S15A-1811-530) or higher before the power windows will initialize.

PROCEDURE
For affected vehicles, only after replacing a window lift motor:
1. Check the vehicle’s current I-Level. This information can be found using ISTA 4, AIR, or the key read
data. Is the vehicle’s current I-Level S15A-18-03-511 or lower?
Yes: Proceed to step 2.
No: Continue window diagnosis for initialization errors, this SI B does not apply.
2. Program the vehicle to the latest I-Level using ISTA 4.14.2x (I-Level S15A-18-11-530) or higher.
Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have
the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

3. Initialize the power windows as needed and retest operation.
Note: The following preconditions must be met before initialization will be successful:



Outside temperature (the temperature displayed in the instrument cluster) between 60°F and 104°F.



All doors must be closed



Vehicle in PAD mode



Vehicle speed below 1mph (vehicle must be at a standstill)



Battery voltage between 12-14.6v. Depending on battery charger settings, the vehicle may require
initialization without being connected to a battery charger.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered, including applicable diagnosis, under the terms of the:



BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks; or
In conjunction with an “eligible repair” this is covered under the terms of the BMW Certified Pre-Owned
Program.

Programming/encoding control unit(s)

During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also
includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced one
time.
Vehicle Programming and Encoding
A. The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur “during” this programming
procedure:
• Please claim this “consequential” control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable KSD2/AIR labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order in the claim comments
section.
B. For control module failures that occurred “prior” to performing this programming procedure:
• When “covered” under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work
using the applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in KSD2/AIR.
