Noise Symptom - Creaking Noise from Panoramic Roof When Driving (I-no. 3FU):
Reworking panoramic roof (SY 139/18)

Panoramic roof

Symptom:

Loud creaking noises can come from the panoramic roof area while driving.

Cause:

Certain threaded joints between the roof assembly and reinforcement plates can settle.
This behavior can result in play between the components and can cause the creaking noise.

Remedial
Action:

In the event of a customer complaint, check all reinforcement plates for play in order to determine the
exact source(s) of the noise.
All reinforcement plates, on which there is play, must be reworked using the lubricating grease "Carbaflo".
Note: Verify torque of all fasteners of the roof frame to the body.

Introduction:

Since July 23, 2018, the reinforcement plates have been pre-treated during production and there are no
longer any unwanted noises.

Preliminary work:
1.1

Move all seats down fully and to the rear.

1.2

Lower the headliner and set it down on the seats, see  Workshop Manual '708419
Removing and installing headliner'.
Information
Care must be taken when working around the headliner when it is in the lowered position. It
can be creased easily.

2.1

Check for play on all reinforcement plates by moving them vertically.
If there is play, the relevant reinforcement plates must be reworked.

Rework front reinforcement plate ( Overview: Front reinforcement plates -1 and/or 2-):
3.1

Spray Carbaflo into a suitable container and have a application brush ready.

3.2

Unscrew the relevant screw ( Overview: Front reinforcement plates -3-).

3.3

Lift the relevant reinforcement plate slightly. Using the brush, apply a thin film of Carbaflo
around the loosened threaded joint between the body and reinforcement plate.

3.4

Re-fit the loosened screw and tighten to Tightening torque 2.5 Nm (1.75 ftlb.)
+/-0.3 Nm (+/-0.2 ftlb.) .
Warning: Low torque value, care must be taken not to over torque fasteners and
strip threads.

3.5

Remove excess Carbaflo around the threaded joint using a clean cloth.

4.1

Remove front roof sun blind, see  Workshop Manual '607019 Removing and installing front
roof sun blind'.

4.2

Spray Carbaflo into a suitable container and have brush ready.

4.3

Unscrew the relevant screw ( Overview: Rear reinforcement plates -3-).

4.4

Lift the relevant reinforcement plate slightly. Using the brush, apply a thin film of Carbaflo
around the loosened threaded joint between the body and reinforcement plate.

4.5

Re-fit the loosened screw with screw locking agent and tighten to Tightening torque
4.5 Nm (3.25 ftlb.) +/-0.3 Nm (+/-0.2 ftlb.) .
Warning: Low torque value, care must be taken not to over torque fasteners and
strip threads.

4.6

Remove excess Carbaflo around the threaded joint using a clean cloth.

4.7

Install front roof sun blind, see  Workshop Manual '607019 Removing and installing front
roof sun blind'.

Subsequent work:
5.1

Secure the headliner, see  Workshop Manual '708419 Removing and installing headliner section on "Installing"'.

5.2

Move all seats back to their original position.
