DELIVERY STOP: PROGRAM KAFAS MODULE
New information provided by this revision is preceded by this symbol

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer
delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the
next time the vehicle is in the shop.
This Service Information bulletin replaces SI B66 15 18 dated October 2018
What’s New:
• Procedure: Add statement for using ICOM Next to program G Series vehicles

AFFECTED VEHICLES
A Delivery Stop has been issued (effective October 25, 2018) on Model Year 2019 BMW X5 SAV Series
vehicles that have been produced between September 18, 2018 – October 25, 2018.
Approximately 1,929 vehicles are affected by this delivery stop.
Affected vehicles show the campaign as “Open” when checked either in Warranty Vehicle Inquiry, AIR or ISPA
Next and identified with the description:
• STOP013457 B661518 Delivery Stop: Program Control Units (KAFAS)
All of the other systems including DAR and the RDR system will show the Stop Sale Sign starting tomorrow.
Please utilize the Inventory Campaign Details under ROSS which shows all vehicles that have a Stop Sale in
your inventory.

SITUATION
The KAFAS (Camera Assisted Drivers Assistance System) module erroneously trigger warnings and CCMs
(Check Control Messages) which lead to customer discomfort and uncertainty with the KAFAS functionality.

Update the KAFAS module software

PROCEDURE
Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.14.14 or higher (released on Friday October 26th, 2018).
Use the ICOM NEXT when programming any G Series vehicles. Using the old ICOM may cause programming
failures.
If this happens switch to an ICOM NEXT. Select the failed module for manually programming and coding
(Vehicle management -> Software Update -> Expanded).
This should successfully recover the failed module.

Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the
latest software.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10 ).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA, refer to Centernet / TIS / Technical Documentation /
Programming.

Vehicle Programming and Encoding
During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also
includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced one
time.
A. The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do not
have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur “during” this programming
procedure:
• Please claim this “consequential” control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable KSD2/AIR labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments section.
B. For control module failures that occurred “prior” to performing this programming procedure:
• When “covered” under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work using the
applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in KSD2/AIR.

Please be reminded that it is a violation of Federal law for you to sell, lease or deliver
any vehicle covered by this notification until the delivery stop repair has been
performed. This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to a
consumer until it is fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to a delivery
stop. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of this law.
Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles
subject to a delivery stop until the repair is completed.
