Trucks equipped with a J08 engine
OVERVIEW:
The subject vehicle may experience air spring chafing damage
due to contact with the frame rail. An air spring shield has been
made available to prevent air spring failure due to frame rail
chafing.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
- Read and understand all instructions and procedures before you
begin the work.
- Read and follow all WARNINGS and NOTICES set forth in this
publication. These alerts help to avoid damage to components,
serious personal injury, or both.
- Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface.
- Place the gear shift lever in "Neutral" or "Park".
- Apply the parking brake firmly and confirm parking brake
activation.
- Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition switch.
- Always wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes.
- Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all the wheels to
prevent the vehicle from moving.

VEHICLE PREPARATION:
1. Park the vehicle on a flat, level and solid surface.

2. Confirm the engine is stopped, the ignition switch is in the off (LOCK)
position, and the key is removed.

3. Apply the parking brake.

4. Chock all of the wheels.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and place a jack stand under each frame
rail. Lower the frame onto the jack stands, ensuring no weight is carried by
the rear suspension.

2. Disconnect the air hoses on both sides of the vehicle.
(Use the same procedure for both sides).

NOTICE: Only one side is shown in the photo below.

3. Remove the nuts, washers, and bolts from the air springs on both sides
of the vehicle. Retain the nuts, washers and bolts for reassembly.
(Use the same procedure for both sides).

4. Place the first upper air spring shield on top of the air spring as shown in
the photo below, with the adhesive strips facing up. Center the upper air
spring shield above the air spring with the inner edge 1/8 to 1/4 inch inward
of the inside edge of the frame rail. Remove the paper backing from the
adhesive strips and push the upper air spring shield onto the frame rail.
Repeat the procedure with the second shield.
(Same procedure for both sides).
NOTICE: Double check the air spring shields are fully adhered to the frame
rail before moving onto step 5.

5. Reinstall the fasteners removed in step 3 on both sides of the vehicle.
Raise the axle as needed to fully seat the air springs up against the frame
rail. Tighten the fasteners to the specified torque.
Specified Torque: 249 lb-ft (337Nm)

6. Connect the air hose.
(Use the same procedure for both sides).

7. Raise the rear of the vehicle and remove the jack stands from each
frame rail. Then proceed with lowering the vehicle.

FINAL INSPECTION:
1. To complete this TSB review and confirm the following:
• Both upper air spring shields are installed correctly.
• Both air springs are fully seated against the frame and all bolts are
tightened to the specified torque.
• All air lines are intact and no air leaks are present
