B38 Engine: Mixture Faults Stored in DME and Cylinder Head Cover Leaking Engine Oil

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI M11 03 15 dated February 2016.

With the B38 engine

SITUATION

The customer may have one of the following complaints:
z

The engine malfunction light is illuminated with misfire or mixture faults stored in the DME.

z

The vehicle runs poorly and may consume engine oil.

z

Smoke from the exhaust tailpipe.

z

Engine oil leak at the cylinder head cover gasket area. See illustrations for additional
information.

Engine oil leak (1) at the front edge of
the cylinder head cover where it meets
the cylinder head (2).
In some cases the cylinder head cover
gasket material may be bulging out
from between the cylinder head cover
and cylinder head mating surfaces.

When the cylinder head cover is
removed, the cylinder head cover
gasket material is damaged (1) near the
crankcase ventilation drains (2) or the
bolt holes (3).

PROCEDURE

1. Replace the cylinder head cover P/N 11 12 7 611 277 that includes the cylinder head cover
gasket and profile gasket for the HPP pump.
Refer to Repair Instruction 11 12 000 “Removing and installing/sealing cylinder head cover.”
2. Replace the engine oil and filter. Do not reset the CBS for engine oil service unless the
service qualifies to be performed.

Covered under the terms of the MINI Maintenance Program.
If the engine oil service task shows Recommended, Due or qualifies to be performed based on the
60-day bundling procedure (per SI M01 06 13), claim the service under maintenance program and
reset the engine oil service CBS data to 100%.
Combined and Other Required Maintenance Service Tasks
Please be sure to perform the service tasks that are “combined with engine oil” when applicable, as
well as any “stand alone” maintenance tasks that qualify.
If eligible, claim these other items under the MINI Maintenance Program or, after reviewing with
the customer with his or her approval, invoice these items separately as customer-pay.

Overlapping Labor – Other Repairs
If invoicing additional KSD2 flat rate labor operation codes for the other repair work results in
overlapping labor being claimed, invoice work time labor operation 00 50 000 instead for the
additional time (FRU) minus the overlap.
On the repair order and in the claim comment section, please identify the labor operations that labor
operation code 00 50 000 replaces and itemize the claimed FRU amount.
Even though work time labor operation code 00 50 000 ends in “000,” it is not considered a Main
labor operation. When work time labor operation 00 50 000 is being used for work that will be
claimed under different defect codes, separate punch time(s) are required.
