This Service Information bulletin and attachment supersedes SI M11 07 15 dated October 2015.
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before
customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please
perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.
SUBJECT

Service Action: Evaporate Water Condensation from the Crankcase
MODEL

F55 (Cooper, 4-door Hardtop)
F56 (Cooper, 2-door Hardtop)
SITUATION

Excessive amount of water condensation may accumulate in the engine’s crankcase.
With prolonged vehicle storage, water condensation in engine’s oil may cause oil pump
malfunction.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves F55 and F56 models (MINI Cooper with the B38 engine) produced
from 07/05/2014 to 02/24/2015 that are:
z

Still a “new vehicle” in dealer inventory (no in-service date reported), and the

z

Current odometer mileage is 155 or less.

Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked
either in the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
CAUSE

Increased number of colds starts and stops during a vehicle’s transportation and storage process
(prior to customer delivery).
CORRECTION

Water must be removed from engine’s oil by operating the engine at its normal working
temperature.
PROCEDURE

Important Note:
If the Check Control message “Oil Pressure” appears after engine start up, or during engine
operation, stop the procedure. Follow the repair procedure from Service Bulletin M11 06 15.
1. Refuel the vehicle with one gallon of gasoline

2. In a well ventilated area, operate the engine at idle speed for 30 minutes
3. Increase the engine speed to 3,500 rpm and keep it at that level for 2 minutes
4. Turn off the engine and remove the engine oil cap from the valve cover allowing moisture to
evaporate
5. After five minutes, reinstall the oil cap
6. Procedure is complete.
Important Note:
On vehicles which still show campaign status “Open”, but were already placed in service and
mileage exceeds 155 miles, do not perform a “drying procedure”. Close the campaign using Labor
Operation 00 63 776.
