Service Action: B46 and B48 Engines – Check and Replace Crankshaft Guide Bearing
MODEL
F55 (Cooper S Hardtop 4 Door)
F56 (Cooper S Hardtop 2 door)
SITUATION
The upper crankshaft guide bearing may wear out prematurely. The wear on the guide bearing can
cause the clutch pedal to malfunction during shifting. The Engine Malfunction Warning may be
illuminated and a fault will be stored in the DME memory for the crankshaft sensor. Noise may be
heard from the lower engine and transmission bell housing area and engine damage can occur in
rare occasions.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves “682” F55 and F56 vehiclesproduced from January 2014 to
December 2014.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked
either in the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
UNAFFECTED VEHICLES
Vehicles which had a complete new or remanufactured engine assembly previously replaced on or
after June 1, 2015, have installed parts that meet the requirements of this Service Action. No further
repair is necessary.
Refer to the Warranty Information section of this document and use Labor Operation 00 63 925.
PROCEDURE
Refer to the attached repair procedure for checking and replacing the crankshaft guide bearing.
Or
If the crankshaft guide bearing or crankshaft is found damaged during the inspection then the
engine must be replaced and the engine replacement requires TeileClearing authorization.

Describe the condition of engine oil and engine oil filter.
Attach photos of the engine oil filter, damaged crankshaft bearing and crankshaft bearing
surfaces.

All Service Action parts are non-returnable. With the limited amount of vehicles involved, please
verify the failure prior to ordering parts.
It is critical that you limit your orders to vehicles that are at your dealer now or are scheduled
for repairs within the next few days.

Alternate Repair for Bearing Damage
If other work and parts are needed as a result of the issue described in this bulletin, in place of the
parts and labor operations listed above, claim this other work using the applicable KSD2 labor
operations (11 00 091 or 11 00 591, 11 99 000 and 00 50 000) under the defect code listed above.
Overlapping Labor – Associated and/or Other Repairs
If invoicing KSD2 flat rate labor operation codes for the additional repair work results in
overlapping labor being claimed, invoice work time labor operation 00 50 000 for the additional
time (FRU) minus the overlap instead.
On the repair order and in the claim comment section, please identify the labor operations that labor
operation code 00 50 000 replaces and itemize the claimed FRU amount.
Work time labor operation code 00 50 000 is not considered a Main labor operation.
Associated Repairs: When work time labor operation 00 50 000 is used as an extension of the
repair outlined in this bulletin, a separate defect code and punch time(s) are not required.
Other Repairs: When work time labor operation 00 50 000 is used for work that will be claimed
under different defect codes, separate punch time(s) are required.
