Summary
SUBJECT Uneven Brake Pad Wear with Regenerative Braking. Under certain vehicle operating conditions, the brake calipers' outer pads (without wear sensor) will wear faster than the inner pads (with wear sensor). This is a normal brake pad wear characteristic that is inherent to the design of this vehicle. CAUSE Certain driving styles can result with a more frequent fluctuation between the use of the vehicle's service brake and its regenerative braking feature, this type of braking characteristic increases the use and consequently the wear of the outer brake pads.

SITUATION
Under certain vehicle operating conditions, the brake calipers’ outer pads (without wear sensor)
will wear faster than the inner pads (with wear sensor).
This is a normal brake pad wear characteristic that is inherent to the design of this vehicle.
CAUSE
Certain driving styles can result with a more frequent fluctuation between the use of the vehicle’s
service brake and its regenerative braking feature, this type of braking characteristic increases the
use and consequently the wear of the outer brake pads.
PROCEDURE
In order to improve the monitoring as to the amount of wear that is occurring to the “non-sensored”
outer brake pads, an enhanced checking procedure has been developed.
The “Service - standard scope” labor operation (00 00 105) for the “i8” now includes the task for
checking the front and rear brake pads thickness through the wheel.
Front Axle - Outer Pad Thickness*
If the “smallest” measured value is:

Greater than 6.0mm, no further action is required.
If the “smallest” measured value is:
z
Equal to or less than 6.0mm, perform the “additional work - check front inner brake pad”
with applying the matrix that is provided in repair instruction number “34 00 600.”
And for the:
Rear Axle - Outer Pad Thickness*
If the “smallest” measured value is:
z
Greater than 8.5mm, no further action is required.

applying the matrix that is provided in repair instruction number “34 00 601.”

As always, complete the “Standard scope” in conjunction with one or more of the applicable
maintenance service tasks that display in the BMW Maintenance System when they qualify to be
performed.
If the outer brake pads “smallest measured value” is at or below the “thickness specification” that
applies, the “additional work for brake pad thickness check” with applying the repair instruction
matrix must be performed.
