SUBJECT

Foul Odor when Switching On A/C
MODEL

F56 (Cooper, Cooper S 2-door hardtop)
F55 (Cooper, Cooper S 4-door Hardtop)

SITUATION

The customer reports a foul smell (musty, rotten, and vinegary) when the A/C is first turned on that
lasts about five minutes.
CAUSE

Micro-filter position too low in the IHKA housing.
CORRECTION

Do not replace the evaporator!
Restore proper drainage flow from the evaporator and replace micro-filters. Raise the position of
the micro-filters with respect to the IHKA housing.
PROCEDURE

1. Check for proper alignment/ clearance for condensate drain:
z

Exterior (under vehicle)
A. The exhaust heat shield must not squash or damage the protruding condensate drain
hose.
B. There must be clearance between the heat shield and the drain.

z

Interior
A. Remove the driver and passenger side trims. (REP 51 45 …) (Included in 64 31 010)
B. Check from the side whether the condensate drain is seated correctly against the A/Chousing (deformed/rolled/flipped at the top). The flange must be sealed uniformly
around the drain hole of the A/C housing.
C. Check if there is any saturation of the carpet from water around the drain.

D. If deformation of the drain is seen or water damage to the carpet then the condensate
drain must be replaced. Lower the exhaust and heat shield to access the A/C drain.

Remove the micro-filters from the IHKA housing (REP 64 31 010).
Clean the evaporator and housing using MINI lance/wand (83 30 2 413 653) with Spray Gun
from SATA USA.
• Dealer can order the gun directly from SATA and receive a 25% discount for a limited
time.
• Item #11072 – HRS Undercoat gun, Type 1, without wands.

3. Use Repair Instructions 64 51 001 with the approved BMW Group products in the parts list
below.
4. Self-flush the evaporator by parking the vehicle outdoors and let it run for 12 minutes with
the A/C on and the windows open. The resulting condensation will flush out any remaining
contaminants. If you are in a low humidity environment, flush the evaporator and housing
with water using the MINI lance/wand (P/N 64 51 2 413 653).Modify the new lower microfilter with hot glue gun and glue sticks (previously provided for MINI crash pads) according
description below to provide offsets on the bottom to prevent wicking of the water into the
filter. NOTE-the old filter can be used as a future template for the hot glue dimensions.

All 3 hot glue applications must be double layered, be 15 mm long and have a total height of
4-5 mm. Placement of the hot glue must in the exact locations shown to prevent complications
with the condensate water flow.

5. Allow the applied glue time to dry then then install the upper and lower micro-filters in the
housing (REP 64 31 010).
