BRAKE PAD MAINTENANCE SERVICES: BRAKE DISC
RESURFACING GUIDELINES
This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI 34 10 16 dated January 2017.

MODEL
All
With Standard Brake Discs/Rotors (Non-Drilled or Non-Ceramic Brake Disc/Rotors)

SITUATION
Vehicle comes to the workshop for a:
A. Brake pad maintenance service (CBS/CBR displaying “Recommended” or “Due”); or
B. Vehicle inspection to address a customer’s brake-related concern; or
C. Complimentary multi-point or State mandated inspection;
And:
The brake discs/rotors surfaces are found not suitable for the installation of new
brake pads due to grooving/scoring and/or corrosion as described in the attachment.

CORRECTION
When an axle’s brake disc/rotor measured thicknesses are still above the minimum specification,
the procedure of resurfacing the brake discs/rotors has been implemented as an alternative to their
replacement, as outlined in this bulletin.
For each axle as required and when permissible, resurface the brake discs/rotors with a BMW
approved “on-car” brake lathe.
Note: Vehicles equipped with QMVH rear differential are excluded from rear rotor
resurfacing.

Attention:

The BMW approved “on-car” brake lathe has been added to your workshop’s list of required
equipment (found in TIS/Tools & Equipment / BMW Workshop Equipment List).
By February 15, 2017, BMWNA will be providing a one-time Manufacturer’s discount of $1,500 per
center applied as a miscellaneous credit to your center’s non-vehicle billing account. This discount
should be used for the purchasing of one of the approved machines listed in the Equipment
Program.
In exchange for this discount, all BMW centers will be required to submit a purchase order for the
On-Car Brake lathe by April 15th, 2017.
On May 1, 2017, all BMW centers will be required to follow the corresponding service information
bulletins. Any rotors submitted for reimbursement under Warranty will be subject to review by the
Warranty Parts Return Center and subject to debit, if found suitable for machining.

PROCEDURE
1. Compare the discs/rotors condition from the repaired vehicle, with the “classification”
examples provided in the “Attachment_B341016_Categorization”.
2. Measure the brake disc/rotor thicknesses on the applicable axle(s).
3. Proceed as follows:

Brake Discs/Rotors are “at or below” the Minimum Specification
z

All Attachment Categorizations:
If a brake disc/rotor thicknesses on an axle are at or below the minimum specification,
replace the brake discs/rotors.

Brake Discs/Rotors are “above” the Minimum Specification
z

Attachment Categorizations: CATEGORY 1
If the brake disc/rotor thickness measurements are above the minimum specification, reuse the existing discs/rotors when performing a brake pad maintenance service
(resurfacing or replacement is not necessary).

If the measured brake disc/rotor thicknesses are:
Above the minimum thickness specification (stamped on the rotor, or from the ISTA
“Brake Replacement” repair instruction/Technical Data) PLUS 0.5 mm;
Then the brake discs/rotors on that axle should be resurfaced using a BMW approved oncar brake disc lathe
Note: Only if your center is not equipped with a BMW approved on-car brake disc lathe, a
brake disc/rotor replacement is then permissible.

Replace the brakes discs/rotors.
Note: Claims for brake discs which are replaced, the parts may be requested by

WPRC for return/inspection.

BMW Maintenance Program and Optional Upgrade Programs - Up to and including model year
2016 vehicles; or the Optional BMW Ultimate Care + “Full Maintenance Programs” - Model year
2017 vehicles and newer.

When the applicable above program or optional programs are active and in conjunction with a
“covered” maintenance service brake pad replacement, brake discs/rotors:

Fine grinding (Centers with an approved “On-Car” Brake Disc/Rotor Lathe); and/or

z

Replacement portion;

Are covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty (4 years/50,000 miles)
for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.
Claim Submission
For brake pad replacement repairs where the corresponding brake discs/rotors are “at or below”
the minimum specification and this repair is eligible for coverage under an applicable maintenance
program:

Claim both the brake pad and disc/rotor replacement repair by utilizing the standard BMW
Maintenance Program defect codes and KSD2 flat rate labor operations.
