INFORMATION

As part of the MINI Continuously Variable Transmission (“CVT”) Class Action Settlement (“Settlement”),
effective on and after June 27, 2014, MINI USA, a division of BMW of North America, LLC (“MINI USA”), has
agreed to extend the limited parts warranty coverage for previously replaced CVT assemblies and/or related
components that qualify.
For qualifying previous repairs, the limited parts warranty for defects in materials or workmanship has been:

Extended by 12 months (25 to 36 months), as long as

z

The accumulated mileage on that assembly or component has not exceeded 50,000 miles.

This bulletin is a notice of “parts warranty extension” that applies to qualifying previous repairs. This is not
a notice of a Recall or Service Action.
There is no immediate repair required unless the MINI vehicle is currently experiencing a problem with a CVT
assembly or component that was previously replaced by an authorized MINI dealer or BMW center.
Prior Repairs – Qualifications
Under the terms of this Settlement, only CVT assemblies and/or related components that were previously repaired
and/or replaced at an authorized MINI dealer or BMW center as customer-pay, dealer internal work or under
either the New Passenger Car Limited Warranty or a MINI USA program will receive both the standard and
additional CVT extended parts warranties.
This parts warranty extension does not apply to CVT parts sold over the counter and installed by “out of
network/independent” non-authorized MINI dealers/BMW centers or through customer self-performed
repairs.

“Customer Notification” and eligibility requirements have been communicated to MINI customers through the
Settlement process and the Settlement website.
Eligible MINI Vehicles
The limited parts warranty extension applies to the following MINI Cooper vehicles:
z

R50: Produced from June 11, 2001 to November 28, 2006; and the

z

R52: Produced from March 6, 2004 to July 11, 2008

The R52 MINI Cooper S Convertible is not equipped with a CVT and is excluded.
Important note: The vehicle production dates listed above and in the attachment are for reference only.
The DCSnet Warranty Vehicle Inquiry’s “Vehicle Comment” section for each eligible vehicle has been updated.
To verify and view a specific VIN’s limited CVT parts warranty extension information, please select the “Vehicle
Comment” button.
Vehicle-related comments, when applicable, are viewable when the button’s letters are displayed in red.

The CVT parts warranties cover only MINI Original Parts that were installed by an authorized MINI
dealer or BMW center.
The customer must provide a copy of an authorized MINI dealer’s repair order/invoice or receipt to prove the parts
warranty start date.
Use the part’s warranty start date to determine the eligible parts warranty coverage period.
Level One Coverage
A complete CVT assembly was replaced prior:

The assembly and/or a corresponding replaceable component of the assembly are eligible for the extended
parts warranty coverage.

Level Two Coverage
A replaceable component of the CVT assembly was replaced prior:

Only that replaced component is eligible for the extended parts warranty coverage.

SITUATION

A MINI vehicle’s CVT assembly or component that was previously repaired and/or replaced by an authorized
MINI dealer or BMW center may experience a subsequent failure.
PROCEDURE

If a previously replaced CVT assembly or component experiences a failure due to a defect in materials or
workmanship, perform the appropriate repair to correct the problem.
Do not perform preventive measure repairs.
Always refer to the applicable ISTA Repair Instructions.
Note: Always check the DCSnet Warranty Vehicle Inquiry “Vehicle Comments” and the “Repair History
(Claims)” sections first before performing any repairs.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Eligible MINI vehicles will have a DCSnet VIN-specific “Vehicle Comment” that provides the following
information:
“MINI CVT Class Action Settlement, as of June 27, 2014, the limited "parts warranty" for a qualifying
previously replaced CVT assembly/component has been extended by 12 mths (25 to 36 mths), as long as the
mileage on the assembly/component has not exceeded 50,000 miles. For information on qualifying repairs
and claim submission procedures, see Service Information bulletin M01 05 14 (This is not a notice of Recall
or Service Action). Also see www.minicvtsettlement.com.”
This extended parts warranty coverage is transferable.
To qualify for this warranty extension, the previous CVT assemblies and/or related components repairs must also
have been performed by an authorized MINI dealer or BMW center in the United States (including Puerto Rico).
The customer must provide a copy of an authorized MINI dealer’s repair order/invoice or receipt to prove the parts
warranty start date. A claim submitted without this invoice on file at your dealer is not eligible for reimbursement.
“Qualified CVT parts warranty repairs and/or replacements” must performed by an “authorized MINI
dealer” in the United States (including Puerto Rico).
Should the CVT assembly or component part fail again, it is covered by the remaining portion of the parts
warranty (standard and the additional CVT extended parts warranty).

The existing parts warranty coverage for all other parts has not changed.

work with the defect code below and follow the “KSD2 Flat Rate Labor Operation Usage” instructions.
